Carrying a Rifle OK?

Is it legal to carry a loaded rifle in the passenger seat of my car? Probably a stupid question, but I left my handguns back home in Minnesota. How about carrying a rifle openly in Memphis?

If you have a HCP in the state of Tennessee it is legal for you to carry a loaded rifle or shotgun in your vehicle.You cannot however have one loaded in the chamber unless you are in fear for your life. Carrying a rifle openly in memphis, i do not know for sure.

Openly, as in down the street, will probably get unwanted law enforcement attention.

Probably not the smartest idea legal or not. Maybe in a rural area but I wouldn't do it while cruising through the city.

But as stated above, it's only legal if you have a valid TN HCP and you don't have a round in the chamber.

A state carry permit pertains to handguns only.

Carry of loaded rifle in general public is unlawful carry, permit or not.

Except if it's in your vehicle. Then an HCP allows it to be loaded, but not one in the chamber.

HCP does not allow walking around with a long gun.

It would be wiser and much less expensive to go back to Minnesota and get your handguns than it would be to carry a rifle in the seat of your car in Memphis. I can picture several things happening, none of them would be good.

I know i wouldn't feel safe without my AR in the passenger seat in Memphis Good luck OP!

My advice; unless you want your gun to be stolen while you get gas, I recommend you do put it in the trunk, and if you don't want your rifle to get torn up from sliding around then put it in a rifle bag.

Rem 870 without one in the chamber sounds good to me. Legal and effective.
