The Clan McGregor is pretty nasty stuff there Rabbi. Try to find something that comes in glass. Dotsun mentioned Grants. That stuff is affordable and tastes great.

Yep, I've had The Clan in the freezer for about 6 months now. I just can't bring myself to finish the bottle. :-x It's probably fit to clean a wound or something.

I prefer Grants to Johnny Walker red (Yuck) and it's even cheaper.

Mix it with ginger ale and you wont notice a thing.

Picked some Evan Williams Single Barrel and Woodford Reserve on the way home. They had a bottle of Pappa Van Winkle Rye...$259.99 for a litre bottle.

$259??? WTF??? Last one I bought was like $50 and I thought that was outrageous.

You need to stop by my house and sample some.

No Fighting Cock fans here?. Heaven Hill Distillery looks out for us drunks,by providing good liquer at a reasonable price.

Ooof, Bighting Cock and Heathen Hill should not be mentioned in the same thread that mentions Van Winkle and Woodford. LOL

I am not a big fan at all of Grey Goose, Stoly not so much. Both of them have a taste to it. Vodka should be neutral and basically only taste like what you mix it with.

If you like the Luksowa you really ought to give VikingFjord a try. Especially if you are east of the plateau, LOL. It is one of our brands and a big seller. You can find it in 1.75 ltr glass bottles for 19.99 or maybe even as low as 16.99 if you find it on sale. Also look for the necker that is a $3 mail in rebate. BTW VikingFjord is potatoe based like Luksowa. If I drink vodka I mix it with diet Mt. Dew. It makes a Dewtini. All rights reserved! Mix it three parts Mt. Dew to one part vodka.

i tried the Cap't Reserve one time, won't be making that mistake again, LOL Big hangover alright. Too much sugar in that stuff.

Karhman let us know what you find out about the Evan and Woodford. I am curious as to how you find them different.

wow this thread took off

Dave stay away from the Clan, bad juju in that bottle. Would I be out of line to say bad JewJew in that bottle :):-x sorry, really....

I did sell a special order and delivery of Badel today though. 4 one liter bottles of it out the door to one of our retailer customers.

Who are you referring to Urse?

Of course there is a huge difference between Grandad, Woodford and Blantons. I had already stated the big difference in bourbon is years aged. Woodford is a very soft bourbon aged a tad longer than four years, IIRC it is 8 year old. Never personally drank Blantons but I believe it is in the same league as Woodford. Both of which aside from aged longer are also single barrel bourbons. They are both higher proof as well, 92 maybe.

Most bourbons are blends of thousands of barrels.

Small batch bourbon is typically about 100 barrels blended.

Single barrel is just that. The bottle contains spirits from one specific barrel.

For that matter Early Times is not even a bourbon. Read the label, no claim to be bourbon on it. Early Times is aged in recycled bourbon barrels. At best it is KY whisky. For whisky to be bourbon one condition is that it is aged in a new charred oak barrel. Also ET is 80 proof

Old Grandad is bourbon and also fine product for the money. It is 86 proof and aged for four years IIRC.

I was talking to Rabbi............. Last night when I glanced over the original thread it reminded me of a thread he and I were a part of at getoffthex.com I did not post a reply but the last post I remebered was Rabbi commenting that the differences in bourbons was mild compared to the differences in Scotch. He is correct comparatively but I still feel the difference in bargain basement and top shelf bourbons is vast. I have not personally touched a bottle of Early Times in 15 years so that was just the cheapest crap I could think of off the top of my head. Grandad is not even in the conversation IMHO. The Evan Williams is good and so is Booker's and Blanton's but my personal preference is Woodford. As far as vodka I like Ketel One and Stohli's. On a side note: Once while on a couple days off in Warsaw, Poland my cohorts and I check into the hotel and make plans to meet in the hotel bar to sample the local potato water. Much to our suprise when we get to the bar they have maybe 5 different vodkas and over 20 whiskeys and bourbons. We ended up drinking Booker's with Sam Adams beer back. Go figure! We were more successful in our potato water search the next day at a local house of ill repute.:-x As far as Scotch goes I think I have too many southern in-bred redneck genes to appreciate it honestly:shrug: Not that thats a bad thing.:)

All vodkas taste like something. I think it's unavoidable. Unless you want to start drinking PGA.

Clan MacGregor (renamed Klan MacGregor in Mike's honor) is fine for its intended purpose: mixed drinks.

Mike, I gather you are in this business. What is your impression of Brown-Forman and esp their purchase of Casa Heradura?

Urse, I regularly buy and drink real bottom shelf bourbons. Of course I drink about a bottle of the stuff a week so it doesn't matter what I get and I dont want to spend the extra money.

Posted

Rabbi I don't drink very often anymore so when I do it is generally a treat so I like to spoil myself.

I find Grandad okay mixed 50/50 with water over ice. It is a little hot but worth it for the extra oomph, do not compare it with Woodford or the like. More comparable to Beam White Label.

Casa Heradura

I have never tasted it. Tequila is not a very good seller in this market. There is one top dog and all the others are also rans. Of course I am talking about Patron. We handle a couple of very good Tequilas, all 100% agave. I think we are getting a contract on some Cuervo like tequila, but I can't think of the name of it. It will be some BS priced to compete with Jose. Personally I would rather see the effort go into selling some other spirit but then I am not consulted on these affairs, LOL.

We actually are getting one tequila that comes in a 1911 (yes the gun) shaped bottle. We will market it exclusively in Gatlinburg. Gonna retail for about 40 bucks for a 375 ml bottle. shhhh keep it under your hat. I am jockeying to get to keep the sample bottle they sent us.

We do have one very unique Mexican liquor though. It is Mezcal called Scorpion. I have tasted it but never got my mind right drinking it. The attraction is that it comes with an actual Scorpion in the bottle as opposed to a meal worm which traditionally comes in Mezcal.

I had my days drinking tequila. About 25 years ago. Not so much nowdays aside from the occassional couple of shots if we are in Gatlinburg eating at the bar of

No Way Joses. I like to have a shot or two of good stuff with a bottle or two of

Dos Equis.

Anyway Brown Foreman is a monster in the spirits industry. I do not believe we sell any of their labels. I just looked up their labels and they appear in need of a top shelf tequila so this may be a good acquisition for them. Hard to compete with Patron though. But even if you can get a percent or two of the market you can make huge money.

Klan, LOL touche!! hahahahahaha I dunno about drinking that stuff period. Might make a good drain cleaner. But they do have a percent of the market here, someone is making money on it.

i haven't tried Patron, but Herradura Reposado is top-shelf, sippin' Tequila.

Ezra Brooks is a good whiskey (bourbon?) made in Missouri.

Tequila? Heradura is yummy!

How about Black Sambuca! Pull it out of the freezer, and that stuff pours ut of the bottle like tar. I'm not a big fan of anything with a black liquorish taste, but I can drink that stuff like :bowrofl:.

I can't seem to ever find it around here. I've found white, and sometimes red and green, but never black.

Heradura

I just checked the bottle and I spelled it wrong...it's Herradura...and I have the "Reposado". :hiding:

It's very yummy...with a slice of lime and a "Corona" chaser.:bowrofl:

Herradura Silver, Gold or Platinum all are amazing Tequilas. Do yourself a favor though and get some Don Julio. The wife and I have a small vacation rental in Sayulita, Nayarit, Mexico and down there Don Julio is the king of Tequila. Dangerously smooth(maybe even moreso than Herradura) goes down as easy as iced tea.

I know what I like and I know what I have in my cabinet. I have 2 bottles of Old Charter. One is a 8 year old )80 proof), the other is 10 year old.

Where does Old Charter fit in? The ten year old is 86 proof, whereas the 8 year old is 80 proof. See what 2 years does.

Neat thread, learning alot, will have to come back and read it again while I am not so tired.

I'm kinda partial to Cuervo. After all it is my last name in Spanish. Actually, I'm more of a gin fan.

Cuervo

Now you know that stufff is half neutral grain spirits?

Basically it is vodka called tequila. But it will serve the purpose.

Very fine for mixing.

Time to go sling some likker

Old Charter the whiskey that stopped watching the clock, was their slogan in the early 1960s. It's pretty good, a lower priced brand for sure. I think they make a bonded which is good.

Hey Mike.

In the last year or two I have really come to appreciate sipping bourbon. Jim Beam Black is my old stand by. Had some Woodford Revserve at Rabbi's and it was very nice. Any suggestions or favorites I should try?

If you can find it pick up a bottle of Eagle Rare. Its a single barrel and aged 10 years. I believe they also make a 17 year but i haven't tried it yet. I think a bottle of it usually goes for about 35 bucks.

I also like Wild Turkey Rare Breed you may wanna try that too.

If you do like Woodford Reserve you may also want to try 1792. I personally like it better than Woodford and i think its made in the same place. Its also about 3 bucks cheaper.

I'm partial to Irish whiskey's. Any one else drink Bushmills?

Yeah, back when I used to drink the Bushmills was a favorite. My family is from Ireland and Scotland and I have a lot of relatives over there. In Ireland some of the older folks will not touch Bushmills with a 10 foot pole. Bushmills is distilled in Antrim, which is in Northern Ireland so a lot of the hard core types in the Republic won't drink it as they consider it un-Irish. Jameson's which is distilled in ROI (Republic of Ireland) is the choice. Either that or a brand called Paddy's. But most of the folks there nowadays aren't as hung up on the whole Northern Ireland vs Republic thing as they used to be.

If you ever go to Ireland see if you can get your hands on some potean, (pronounced like paw-cheen) it's their version of moonshine and will give you something to tell stories about for years to come.

For something a little different this summer, try a mojito made with silver tequilla instead of rum. Purists might howl, but I think it tastes great. Not as sweet.
