I've said this before in similar threads - this scares me out of my wits, because my son has type 1 diabetes. He has to have food and medication to survive.

That really is a scary aspect to think about. Is there a shelf stable insulin with a long expiration date?

Not that I am aware of.

a disruption in supply chain could cause this in less than a month or 3 weeks. Our society is based on JIT (Just In Time) deliveries. Stores do not store a warehouse of food anymore. They replensih as needed from the Regional distributors.

Scares me too. While not as serious as Diabetes, my wife requires medication for a chronic illness. We have discussed SHTF and EOWAWKI but have not come up with a solution that makes either of us feel comfortable.

Edit: a word

One thing you ask you pharmacist is if your meds come to the pharmacy ready made or if they are mixed it the pharmacy. If it gets that bad that quick, I guess you could smash into a pharmacy and take what you need. I have gout and my meds are stocked in high qty at most pharmacies. My wife has graves and hers is mixed at that pharmacy

The simple, unavoidable truth is that for people dependent on medication for treatment of chronic conditions, a collapse scenario will result in a very high death rate. If things go really bad here in the US, fleeing and becoming a refugee may be the best chance of survival.

Nope. I have been Type 1 diabetic for 30yrs and most will last longer than exp date but not more than 6 months. I have about a 9 month supply that I keep rotated out but it is very tricky. The newer insulin that is produced now that works faster and better doesn't last as long as the older harder to use insulin.

What about the pens? Do they last longer? I'm asking because my sister can fend for herself, but I don't depend on her to take care of my 86 yr old diabetic mother.
