HiViz Magnetic Shotgun Front Sight

Recommended Posts

I just picked up a Remington 870 express supermag for duck season and I'm interested in putting a fiber optic front sight on it. I'm not opposed to having one set in with screws, but the reviews on Cabela's website for the magnetic Cabela's/HiViz are fairly convincing (and at $15, the price is hard to beat). I'll be shooting 3 and 3 1/2 inch shells, though, and there are a few complaints about the magnetic sight not holding. Lots of reviews rave about how well they hold, but few reviews tell you what they're shooting. Anyone have any experience with this site using magnum or super magnum? Or can anyone recommend a good sight and smith to set it for me? I'm in Franklin and work in Nashville. Thanks for any help! - Matt

The magnetic FO sights work ok for field loads, but I don't trust them for heavy loads or tight quarters (like a duck blind). I used one for a couple of years, and bought a screw in bead replacement.

Overall, I am not a very big fan of FO sights, but they are fantastic on a shotgun. They wash a little (ok maybe a lot) at the wrong angle, but they are easy to pick up otherwise.

You might want to check this one out. It locks on tight for sure believe it or not. You can get it in red or green. Very good value IMO.

Edit: For some reason it looses the link to the exact item I wanted to show. To view you will need to go to wing shooting, page two, Glo Dot II Universal.

I have the Truglo dual color universal on both of my H&R pardner pumps and they work well. I do not shoot 3.5", but have shot a bunch of 3" turkey loads through the 12 gauge without any issues. The red/green scheme helps me pick up the sight really well.

I put one on the the same 870 last year. I don't have access to it right now and can't remember the brand. I'll check it tomorrow, but I think it's a truglo. It has a flat base with a notch at one end that snaps under and around the original bead. There is an adhesive to keep it tight to the vent rib. So far I have fired a couple of boxes of 3" Nitro Turkey, a couple of 00buck shells, and a box or two of 3.5" steel through it. It's still holding. I don't think it will last forever, but it seems sturdy enough. Worst case is it falls off and I still have the bead. I'll check the brand and model soon as I can

EDIT: Now that I've searched the net a little bit, mine might be a HiViz. It was pretty cheap from Sportsmans Warehouse.

Thanks for the answers guys. I should have given you a link for the sight I'm looking at:

I like the one Trekbike linked to, but I've got a vented rib, so it won't fit on my barrel.

As cheap as this one is, and with time between now and duck season, I should be able to give it a trial run. If anyone else has any experience with this one - or again, can recommend a permanently mounted sight and a smith in the area they would recommend to do the work, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks again guys!

I havn't been able to check the brand of mine yet (traveling for work). Maybe Wednesday I'll post up a pic of my 870 with the sight. I don't think you will go wrong with that one though for the price. It gets a 4.6 out of 5.0 with 94 reviews on Cabellas site. If it doesn't stick while you're shooting the birds, there's always duck tape

One thing to think about though is the size of the "dot" create by the fiber optic tube. The HiViz claims an oversized diameter, whereas the Truglo is smaller I think. Check out the MAGNUM GLO•DOT™ XTREME SERIES on Truglow's site. IT fits a vent rib. http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/truglo-glo-dot-xtreme-series-standard-mount-1-4-rib-width-red.aspx?a=507693

It's just personal prefereance, but the bigger dot might be too bright in low light and distract from the target. The smaller dot might allow more natural shotgunning. Just something to consider.
