Smokey loads

Newbie question.

I have been using Titegroup for my 40 cal rounds and lead cast bullets and they make me feels as if I'm in a Civil War re-enactment with all of the smoke they throw out. Yesterday I was told that most all powders will smoke when using cast lead bullets. Is that correct or is there something I can use that will not smoke or at least not as bad?

not 100% sure but mine all smoke a bit too. A bit is a far cry from a civil war gun.... are you being funny? I suspect its burnt lube on mine (?).

Are you casting your own? Are you tumble lubing? Too much tumble lube will smoke like a tar kiln.

Either way, David is right, you're burning lube.

Let me ask this, are they accurate and do they leave lead in the bore. IF no to both of those, don't give it another thought.

I still have some 9mm I loaded when I first got into casting w/ tumble lube. I used WAAAAYY too much tumble lube and I also loaded them with Unique which can be smokey at lower pressures. I can fire a full magazine and by the last few shots, I cannot see the target.

No. I bought them from Jessie @ TN Valley Bullets. I doubt that I'll get into that at this point.

Yes I am tumble lubing them.

Yes they smoke like a civil war musket! Whats funny is the looks on other shooters faces!!!

Here's a discussion on it. Follow the link, read and follow the instructions exactly. It WORKS. Reduces smoke tremendously.

Even if the lube is right,Titegroup will smoke with lead. It's very hot burning. WST is by far the best powder to reduce smoke that I have found. You will not be disappointed.

I shoot a 170g SWC in .38 special and out of a 6 inch barreled Colt I get zero smoke with a 3.3g charge. Bullets are cast from pure lead, sized .359 and lubed with my own recipe.

Strange.

I recently switched from titegroup to clays on my 45 loads. I also use a lubasizer. To me clays still smokes a little but its much less and a thinner smoke than with titegroup

The smoke isn't really smoke. It's the lube coming off the bullet as it leaves the muzzle. If you think the lube that professional casters use is bad, try the NRA formula some time. On a clam day after shooting a practical pistol stage you can't find the targets.

THis reminds me of something fun I do. I make my own lube, and sometimes I will add a vial of scented oil to it before I set it aside to harden. Peppermint oil, potpourri ect. YOu wanna see some weird looks on people's faces? Get a nice bouquet fragrance drifting around the range. Peppermint oil and Unique is a VERY nice combo!
