The haka is cool. If you wanna see another good one YouTube the one that the New Zealand rugby team does before games.

Honestly, I could care less what a sports team does before a game. I thought this was a moving tribute to comrades in arms that made the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan.

eta: that came across short and wasn't meant to sound like it.

I served with a few guys from the RNZIR. I tell you, I'd put the British infantry up against anyone in a fight, but by God, I'd NEVER want to have to fight the Kiwis. They are THE toughest, hardest & most resilient bunch of bastards I've ever met.

Watching them do a haka at close range, even just the 12 or 13 guys we had, is pretty intimidating!

I first saw a Haka performed by an New Zealand Parachute Battalion visiting Bragg when I was a young Paratrooper. At the time I found it to be an interesting war chat for a military unit...., now I understand it to be a true insight into the Maori warrior. Since many members of the New Zealand Defense Force are Maori, their traditions are part of their military culture. The Haka is a traditional war dance normally performed in advance of a battle to challenge and intimidate the enemy. A Haka performed at a funeral is use to challenge the deceased to pass into the underworld, and to herald their coming to Tumatauenga, the Maori God of War.

From what I have learned, one of the fallen was a sniper, thus the escort in the gillie suit. The escorts in white gloves are also all badged snipers. The officer kneeling by the hearse is LT COL Steph Michie, Commanding Officer, 2nd/1st Infantry. The Haka is 2/1st's own. I wish I knew the exact translation, but a friend tells me that it talks about being forged in the fires of hell and destroying the enemy.

Aggression, Anger and Pride all rolled up into one.

Well Done!
