TICS vs. NICS question

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Ok long story short. I just moved to Tennessee back in May. Did my class and got my HCP last month so I got all my stuff transferred over. Now I'm planning on buying my first gun from a FFL since I've been here. Before I moved here I purchased several guns from an FFL but it was a NICS check (and I was not charged for it). The FFL I'm talking to told me that it is a $10.00 fee for a TICS background check. (not a NICS but still form 4473)

My question is what is the difference?

ETA: I don't know how true this is since I'm relatively new to this great state. But I was talking to a guy at the range and he said that when he buys his long guns he goes up north to KY to buy due to the TICS system and cheaper sales tax. Like I said I don't know about that, I know how stories go.

Thanks for the answers.

Not sure it would be worth the trouble of going to KY to save 3% cause you'd have to buy a $1000 gun just to pay for the gas

Yeah I would not want to deal with it unless it was a great amount. And yeah it's a $1300.00 AR I'm looking at. I'm not interested in making 2 trips to KY to get 1 gun to "save" a few bucks that I had to put in my tank.

It's true for long guns. Handguns have to be transferred to TN FFL.

I travel to KY often for other reasons, and I have bought a few long guns there. No fee and cheaper tax.

TICS is Tennessees version of the NICS check. I think the $10 fee was supposed to go away after a while. But you know once the government starts collecting money they don't want to stop.

TICS and NICS are pretty much the same thing. TICS just costs $10. You can go to KY and buy long guns from an FFL. Hanguns have to be bought in-state though.

That clears it up for me. All the dealer said was it was thru the TBI which I was lost at since the NICS is FBI. Guess after I'm here awhile I'll figure things out. At least I don't have to get a "permit" to purchase a firearms or register it.

It is just Tennessee's version of the program for an instant background.

It's an unnecessary overlay on top of NICS, doing badly what not be done at all, a make work project for TBI at best, and a de facto state firearms tax
