Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I didn't know where else to put it. I am going to Alabama to visit my family. I figured while I'm down there I could check out some gun shops. Could I purchase in Alabama or is it just like it is here and you have to be a resident? What about private sales? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

They can ship it to your local FFL. That will cost extra, of course. That's usually only $20-$30.

I have bought a long gun in Alabama and walked out the door. I think for a handgun it would have to go through a FFL. Fee + shipping.

Correct.

Yep, it's federal law that you have to be a resident of the state to purchase a handgun and walk out the door with it, otherwise it has to be shipped to a FFL in your home state.

Yup.

I just sold a shotgun to an AL resident on Friday.

Could his family "buy" it for him, then give it as a "gift"? I don't know AL law but could potentially do that here if the situation was reversed?

Probably not if the intent was to circumvent the law. That would be a straw purchase as the ultimate buyer is prohibited as a non resident.

Question, how would anyone know?

I am concerned that Alabama is out of shotguns.
