K31 range report - 400 yards

Went to Montgomery Shooting Complex today and thought I would try my Swiss K31 w/ iron sights at 400 yards. I have shot my Garand here before and was pretty pleased putting all 8 rounds on the sillhouette using surplus Greek .30-06.

Today I tried the K31 using Swiss surplus GP11. I set the rear sight at 3 1/2 thinking since it's set for meters, that would get me close to 366 meters or 400 yards. My son was spotting and said, "Dad, you are shooting over the target". I pulled it back some and was still over. I set it at 3 and was bottom of target. Made some adjustments and walked it up to near bullyseye on my last shots.

We spent most of the day comparing .308 ammo in another gun, so I only brought 10 rounds of Swiss along. Considering I spent much of the shots adjusting the elevation, I am very pleased with the results. Overall group at widest point (top to bottom) is 12". The overall paper background is 22 x 28", which is much smaller than the life size sillhouette I used before. I honestly think the group would be half that once the sights were dialed in for the distance, which I will try again. Not bad for surplus ammo at 400 yards w/ iron sights.

By comparison, I looked at my last group w/ my Garand and this is a tighter group even playing w/ the elevation.
