? is quite appropriate. Investigate what? False weather reports?

I was addressing the SSA. I don’t know why NOAA would need investigators, but I would think they have building security. They have a lot of high dollar equipment.

I'm just curious to know why the SSA, and of all agencies NOAA, needs an armed contingent.

They don't. Almost none of them need an armed contingent. It used to be a lot different. Adding it up with the Education dept. (whatever they are called now) buying shotguns, and I'm sure other examples, makes this really stupid of our government.

Hey, it's either stupid or malicious.

Weather Security. Now that's good. :D

Don't worry folks. The servers here at TGO are housed in ESD Aluminum containers (made by aliens in Cusco Peru, no less!) .

That stuff is like way stronger than Reynolds Wrap.

Every federal agency has an Office of Inspector General (OIG) which does criminal investigations specific to their agency's mission. NOAA has a law enforcement branch to protect the fisheries. SSA has Special Agents who primarily investigate disability and welfare fraud. The people who commit welfare fraud often have lengthy criminal records and might not be happy to have investigators knock on their door. The ammo is used for carry and quals four times per year. The 174,000 rounds of HP will probably bid at no more than 30 cents a round. Not an outrageous yearly training budget for a law enforcement agency with close to 300 agents. Here is a recent local case investigated by Veteran's Affairs and SSA OIG agents:

Thanks for your inquiry. Here is the statement the NOAA Communications Office sent to reporters who asked about this. Sorry for the confusion. Naomi

"Due to a clerical error in the federal business vendor process, a solicitation for ammunition and targets for the NOAA Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement mistakenly identified NOAA's National Weather Service as the requesting office. The error is being fixed and will soon appear correctly in the electronic federal bidding system. The ammunition is standard issue for many law enforcement agencies and it will be used by 63 NOAA enforcement personnel in their firearms qualifications and training. NOAA officers and agents enforce the nation's ocean and fishing laws to ensure a level playing field for fishermen and to protect marine species like whales, dolphins and turtles."

Background:

Agents and officers are required to have 200 rounds in his or her duty bag, and twice-a-year firearm qualification and training calls for agents to use another 500-600 rounds. In addition, firearms instructors with more than one pistol may need more rounds in a year. In 2011, the guidance was that each agent and officer would need 700 rounds per year to meet these requirements.

All these federal agencies now know they are being watched and that people aren't in the mood for any bulls###.

There are enough patriots in these agencies that have multiple lines of communications to blow the whistle if or when the funny business starts.

Careful! That description is going to hit too close to home for many of our board members! Its just a lot easier (and more fun) to take uninformed pot-shots at the stereotypical .gov worker.

You left out the part about Obama using this as his model for stealing the election.

So many people are certain that nothing like that could ever happen in our country. The founding fathers warned us to be always alert to government tyranny. Although the Nazis and Communist were in Germany and Russia, those atrocities that Hitler and Lennin and Stalin did were things that our founding fathers knew could happen in our country if the people went to sleep and were not the empowering authority of governing. We the people of the USA in the last thirty or forty years have gone to sleep at the wheel of authority, and have empowered the corrupt politicians who think they know better than the people who elect them.

Maybe, just maybe, during the last four years the sleeping people have awakened to the tyranny our founding fathers warned us about, and they will sound out loudly this November that the people are still the empowering authority of the good ole USA.

I'm good. My liberal friends have agreed to hide me under their floorboards.
