The purpose of the TNSG is to prove a professional complement of personnel to support the Governor of the State of Tennessee and the Adjutant General by assisting the Tennessee Army National Guard as a force multiplier and by assisting civil authorities when requested providing a variety of serviced such as ceremonial, security, military funeral honors, and medical aid. The TNSG is regulated by the Tennessee State Code Annotated and serves only within the borders of the State.

The Tennessee State Guard is not a club. It is a military force that responds to community requests for homeland security, EMA response, and community service. The State Guard provides a public service for the people of Tennessee, and members train as soldiers to assist TEMA and local communities when needed. You will be serving with other people who are patriotic and have a knowing respect for military preparedness, and you will be carrying on a tradition of volunteerism that dates back to the creation of Tennessee as a state. Most challenging of all, you will have an opportunity to use the training you have acqired in military and civilian life to help build the cadre of the Tennessee State Guard

Correct, the TNSG is not authorized to carry firearms by the Military Department of the State of Tennessee.

No disrespect intended, I have talked to a few of the higher ranked men and know they are veterans and served in combat arms. But the no firearms bit tells me the boots are not trained and or not responsible. Maybe there is some liability issues there but I cant see the need for this unit. If they are the last to fall in under hard times to back up the NG or homeland security they need to be trained and armed. Most veterans who have a viable MOS that would fit into civilian life are working it now.

There's no way I'd sign up to be an UNARMED Homeland Security anything.

sorry...allow CCWs to carry...have a very basic rife training course..for a fee andhave the people bring their own rifles and ammo...something. Unarmed people in uniform are nice targets

I concur. You cannot "guard" anything without some type of weaponry and training.

They also do things like help TEMA and other agencies that need additional personnel to perform community services in time of emergencies.

What have they done for us lately?

If you want help out, join the real military or become a cop.. don't just play one.

Care to elaborate?

Where's all the hate coming from? Next year Tennessee will deploy at least 3,500 Soldiers. If not more.

This guy's resume looks OK to me. He doesn't seem to have an issue with being a member.

Pretty classy. :D

Most of those guys are retired military, or have left the active or reserve components because their schedules do not allow them to be part of something more time consuming.

Are these guys ever going to deploy? No.

Are they going to be on the front lines here CONUS? No.

What they WILL do is help man National Guard armorys when a unit deploys, and will support the families of deployed soldiers in their area.

They also help with administrative and logistical tasks during state emergencies.

Doesnt sound like playing Army. Sounds like dedicated VOLUNTEERS doing their part.

Question:

I notice you dont have a LE or Military icon. What do YOU do to make our state a better place? Ever put the unit before yourself? If not, you should probably STFU.

That about the size of it. +1 to Hero Gear.

I have a slot for a Culinary Arts Specialist. Maybe he will fill it.

No need to get your panties in a wad. Now we know some of what they do. Often criticism is a good way to get good information quickly, and it looks like it worked.

Don't get all butthurt over it. I can't think of one time I've heard of the Tennessee State Guard other than on a gun forum, so I didn't know what they do.

It looks like they do good things.

Reef,

A lot of us have let our fingers be our brains and typed something off the cuff and pressed "submit" before our brain caught up. I applaud you for stepping back in and saying it. I'm sure Joe will as well.

I have no issues with a State auxillary or such. Joe pretty much laid it all out as it should be. As long as they are not a bunch of Mall Ninja's recruting IQ level 20s and then paintballing until they get their real stuff on, I'm good with it.

Well what I said was stupid, I have nothing more to add.

Props to Reef for recognizing and owning up to that fact.

Im not trying to dog you out man, just want to make sure these volunteers get the respect they deserve.

We have all been guilty of shatting on a group that we felt superior to, or didnt understand their purpose and mission.

I can remember being a young 18 year old Infantryman assigned to a very elite and prestigious unit, and thinking that every single REMF around me wasnt worth the kiwi on their boots. Pretty short sighted and arrogant.

I have become wiser in my old age, and realize that not everyone can be a knuckle dragging, meat eating, instrument of destruction.

AND THATS OK!

I have come to realize that yes, we do need all types to fight and win wars. From cooks and clerks, right down to the 4th string State Guard guys sitting on the bench waiting to be called in.

We need all of them, and we should give each and every one our thanks and respect for their dedication and sacrifice.

Happy Memorial Day guys! Honor our warriors this weekend!

Now Joe will have to kill us all for revealing to many details of his assignment.

As long as it involved jumping out of perfectly good airplanes I'll be impressed!

No, seriously, I too joined in the "elite" mentallity at times when I was wearing the maroon beanie. Funny thing was I was looked at as a sub warrior by the guys in the 82nd because I was not in the division but part of 18th ABN Corps. Worse, I was a Signal Officer so two strikes against me. I in turn looked down at the leg (non airborne persons) support guys until I got assigned as transportation officer of my company and had to work with the service and supply guys to keep things running. Cooks are up before anyone and no one wants to train without eating something. Mechanics keep em running, riggers pack the chutes, armorers check the weapons....goes on and on. They are all needed with our current forces structure and all are HEROs

When I said what I said earlier, I had a different understand of what the state guard is. That is to say, I had no idea.

I was under the impression that they were a militia type group because of their name, and it looks like I'm not the only one who had no idea what they do based on some of the posts earlier in this thread.

Had I known what they do as far as helping the military families, manning the Nat'l Guard facilities, etc, I wouldn't have said that. It seems like they are more of a USO type organization.

I hope no one thinks I was downing the military or police, because I wasn't.
