LePage Threatens RNC Boycott

I'm old enough to remember when who will be the pres and vice pres candidate was decided at conventions. When, if it was certain who it was gonna be, at least it was a well-kept secret in a smoke-filled room.

You must be almost as old as dirt then! :) I don't think that's actually happened in almost 50 years has it?

I do remember, back around the JFK time frame that there seemed to be a little question about who would be the nominee but even then that may have been more for keeping the viewers interested than any real doubts about who would be the candidates.

Hi Robert

They are not all cut-and-dried. Here is one that comes to mind--

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republican_Party_presidential_primaries,_1976#Republican_National_Convention

The 1976 Republican National Convention was held in Kansas City. As the convention began, Ford was seen as having a slight lead in delegate votes, but still shy of the 1130 delegates he needed to win. Reagan and Ford both competed for the votes of individual delegates and state delegations. In a bid to woo moderate Northern Republicans, Reagan shocked the convention by announcing that if he won the nomination, Senator Richard Schweiker of Pennsylvania, a moderate, would be his running mate. The move backfired, however, as few moderates switched to Reagan, while many conservative delegates were outraged. The key state of Mississippi, which Reagan needed, narrowly voted to support Ford; it was believed that Reagan's choice of Schweiker had led Clarke Reed, Mississippi's Chairman, to switch to Ford. Ford then won the nomination, narrowly, on the first ballot. He chose Senator Robert Dole of Kansas as his running mate. After giving his acceptance speech, President Ford asked Reagan to come and say a few words to the convention; Reagan proceeded to give an eloquent address which virtually overshadowed Ford's speech.

I was floating around the Medetarian irritating the Russian's during that summer so I saw none of that convention or the primary season (other than voting). However, I think what happened there was part of what prompted some rule changes about primary delegates wasn't it?

In any case, Romney has a vastly superior lead in delegates so unless Paul (more so his supporters than Paul, actually) want to destroy the convention and any chance to defeat Obama I don't see anything happening at this convention that wasn't sanctioned in advance by the RNC. ;)

If they know how its gonna turn out then why hold the convention at all? They wouldn't have to extract oaths of allegiance to romney. They wouldn't have to worry that an un-planned opinion not thunk-up by the GOP leadership might accidentally be allowed utterance. Just put up a big electronic billboard with the result, hand out xerox copies of the platform, have a speech by Romney, put on a hell of a fireworks show and everybody go home with a hangover.

Given the rabid nature of RP supporters, I'd want an oath signed in blood. My experience, while admittedly limited, is that RP supporters seem willing to do almost anything to get their man nominated despite the outcome of the primaries and regardless of most any other consideration - their allegiance sometimes reminds me of an almost religious fervor. :) Edited by RobertNashville

They have one every four years, Lester. I'm sure there are a lot of behind the scenes things going on. I won't begin to

speculate, though. There are winners and losers every time.

As sad as it is to say, we have become "subjects" to our government.

I would say there are at least 50% of the American population that don't like where America is heading. They don't like government to interfere in every aspect of their lives.

The 50% don't like the government as a Nanney state and squandering the wealth of our nation on foreign influence and propping up their economies. They (we) don't like social economic welfare programs providing a life long entitlement to those to lazy to work and earn a living.

They (we) don't like the with holding of federal funds we paid into, to blackmail us to conform to federal programs and socialistic policies. We don't like wasting tax payer dollars on frivolous research projects, building other nations, being the check book for the world!

Yet somehow we always end up picking the lesser of two WEEVILS between the only two parties that can possibly win the presidential election.

Tell me the "system" is not being manipulated in favor of the established elite? I could go on and on...

A one world government is closer than you think.

I don't think we'll make it to that one world

government, Dennis, but I do think there

will be a Hell of a beat down until socialism

is defeated and people go back to their

fundamental beliefs.

It's going to be a painful time ahead.
