Ruger M77 MkII rechamber

I have an M77 with tang safety in 7mm Mag, can I change it to 308 just by getting a new barrel?

What would be a recommended barrel maker for this? I don't want to spend a ton and looking for a heavy target barrel.

Others need to speak up on this; but i think that ya need a new bolt as well as a new barrel. I think the problem is the diameter of the case head of the 7 mag vs the 308. For some reason, i seem to remember that there are three bolt face sizes. Magnum, regular (...308/30-06...), and small. Maybee the rifle guys will start speakin up shortly.

I read something about it being a magnum bolt but no details on the importance of that for a non magnum cartridge. I am hoping that it's a case of the magnum bolt being overkill but still working.

Different cases, different rim diameters. You'd need a new bolt, new magazine, and new barrel. Best to trade rifles.

This is what I am thinking to but this was my first gun given to me by my Dad so I am going to keep it. I may just get a good stock and barrel and just bring it out when I want to shoot something really far away. Good 7 Mag ammo is just so expensive.

Take your money and buy some inexpensive reloading equipment. The 7mm Mag will do anything you can do with a 308.

The 7mm Mag has is a "belted" cartridge which has a larger boltface and different magazine. You could switch to another belted magnum caliber like 300 Win Mag or even .458 Win Mag easier than switching to .308. Get a reloading setup and learn how to "roll your own". We shoot .300 WM around here like its going out of style and save a ton of $$$ by reloading

I think I'll end up getting a single stage setup for this. Been wanting to reload Match 223 as well so now I have more incentive to start reloading.

Nope. Shoule be about the same price. The thing is that you already have a 7mm. If it shoots good, and probably does, you already know what you've got. After you've spent a ton of money rebarreling it, you have no guarantee the new barrel will shoot as good as the factory barrel.

That would be the best option. If you want a 308, buy a 308. YOu can tie up a LOT of money in gunsmithing fees in a hurry. The results will range from awesome to abysmal.
