The citizen-hero put a total of 4 shots in the bad guy, 3 of which were under return fire. I think it'd be hard enough under stress to get 4 hits on an assailant while being shot at...let alone with a pistol from 165 yards.

I'm wondering if that "165" was a typo.

Either one would be a damned good shot with a handgun. That old guy had resolve and did what he had to do.

Good ending.

I'm thinking "165" was either misinterpreted by the author or the old man just can't range stuff as well as he may have in his younger days. Either way, I'm guessing it was a challenging shot based on two assumptions:

1. The perp obviously didn't see him until he shot, suggesting that there was some distance between him since he didn't notice.

2. I doubt the old man was wanting to get that close to a guy that's shooting at police already.

He said that he was using some kinda "magnum" in the article, so based on the guy's age it probably was a .357 or .44 revolver... I'm guessing he wasn't sporting some new fancy caliber. I can't hit a damn thing with any of my 9mm/.40/.45 autoloading pistols at anything past 50 yards, but I'm pretty good out to at least 100 yards with my dads .44 mag w/ 6 inch barrel.

I was thinking the same, especially about the revolver.

The perp would have had tunnel vision from fight or flight syndrome. The old man may have had an 8" 44 magnum for all I know, and had time to let loose some well-aimed shots before the guy noticed him.

I've seen plenty of folks who are perfectly capable of hitting a silhouette at 200 yards with a .357 or .44. There's a whole lot of 'flat' in that part of the country, and long-range shooting with handguns isn't uncommon.

Metallic Silhouette shooting is pretty popular out there, too. Still, a good first shot.

Bob Munden hit a balloon from 600 yard with a .44 magnum. So, 165 is possible, but I'd still bet on the typo.

I can believe it. Curious about it, so yesterday I tried my .44 Mag Super Redhawk at 125+ yds. and was pleasantly surprised with 185 gr LFNs over 6 gr of Trailboss (moderately light load). My shooting sucks, but no doubt I could mess up someone's day at ~150 yards.

Figuring about 10 yards per RV slot, that is only about 15 RVs. A large park might have 50 in a row.

While 165 yards is definitely a long shot, it is possible with a long barrel magnum revolver. My Ruger 6" barrel .357 is deadly accurate especially when it's in single action mode. You hardly have to touch the trigger for it to fire so assuming you've got a steady rest you can reach out and touch someone.

Since long barrel revolvers aren't that popular anymore, it's hard for some folks to believe it until they shoot one themselves.

This looks like the place. It doesn't look like 165 yards

If you go to Google street view on the map linked above the Office "building" matches the Office in the background of the Sheriff's interview shown in the video below.

Out in the middle of Nowhere Texas, this reminds me of the movie "No Country for Old Men"
