Coyote

I finally got some time to actually hunt. My uncle has been losing chickens and a lot of them. He has lost 10 or 11 in the past 2 weeks or so. He is tired of keeping them in the pen. He has personally seen 3 of the chickens get taken by coyotes throughout the weeks. Since I was headed to Perry County anyways I decided to bring all my coyote gear with me. After spending some time with family, I drove over to his house to do some calling. I set up in a field behind his house were he has been seeing them the most. I pulled out my TC coyote reed made a few howls and went right into my DSG cottontail distress on my fox pro. It played through 2 sequences and out came this young male. He ran right up to my caller and 50 or so yards later he layed within 2 feet of it. My total set up to the shot was less than 8 minutes. I called for a little longer but had no more takers.

Equipment used: Howa M1500 Ranchland 243

Catridge: Hornady Superformance 58 grain V Max

Calls: TC coyote pup diaphragms and Fox Pro Wildfire

Sounds played: Young coyote pup howl, DSG cottontail and Coyote pup distress

Stands made: 1

Coyotes seen:1 and 1 shot

Oh and don't mind my blue tennis shoes. I forgot my boots at home. At least I didn't wear my crocs lol. Thats also my dog Jack in the picture. He tries to re-kill the animals I bring to show him.

Nice yote. Good coat for this time of year too. I usually hunt in the winter but I think I may get an early start this year. I have a new AR just itching to take one.

I didn't really realize how stupid my shoes looked until I seen the photo lol. I should have stayed with the crocs.

What fox pro caller are you using? I've been into trapping but think I want to start calling them in. There are just so many different one and they can get real expensive real fast

Currently I'm using a Foxpro Wildfire. It's a great call and if I need more volume then I have an SP55 external speaker I use. The wildfire though has really good volume and holds like 200 sounds. I think I have a little over 100 on it now. For the money around 200 bucks, can't beat the caller.

That is a nice yote. I am not big into coyote hunting. I have 2 small dogs and a pit bull an the bulldog is about to go into heat. I just moved back to the country after years of living in town and was wondering if coyotes are attracted to domesticated dogs in heat. I got the old model 92 30-30 out for my wife when I am not home but have been hearing a few yelping in the area. Should I expect visitors. All of my dog are in a chain link fenced backyard but that had never stopped a dog in heat. Just wondering.

Not saying its impossible but coyotes can be curious and will and have attacked a many family pets.

Isn't there cases where Coyotes have bred with domestic dogs (bitches) while in heat? Called "CoyDogs" I believe. I had one of my female beagle rabbit dogs come into heat, and I shot a coyote running up and down our back fence acting like he was trying to get into her kennel. Maybe just a freak act, I don't know.

Yes and they can be ferocious. They are bad in west TN. I do not personally like the idea of killing coyotes, but I will neither debate that nor condemn those who do. [not openly anyway]

On the other hand I am full on for the eradication of the crossbred "Coydog" I had several run-in's with them in west TN. If you can visualize what a cross between one and a pit-bull would look like, well... I can tell you that's where I learned ball ammo is garbage! I put several 55g FMJ in the shoulder of one only to have him charge me. My compadre at the time was carrying his 870 and some 3.5" loads in an XX full choke. THat was over quickly.

I was out another time and cornered near my car by no less than 4, I know for a fact there was more than that, but that's what I counted in front of me. I was carrying a revolver at the time and I'm not sure if 5 rounds of 38 special would have been enough. I got in the car and shut the door and drove a few feet away before rolling the window down to ...umm...engage.

I'm telling you what little I know and have seen, they do not go down easily. They have the instincts of their wild counterparts but they carry no fear of man just like a domestic dog. There are instances of children being killed too. It happened in nashville about 8 or 10 years ago. Detroit is having issues with them in the abandoned districts. They are not a joke.

Most of the domestic dogs are already wild when they breed with a coyote.

Well my bulldog is not wild by any means but I don't want my mini daschund to get killed protecting his bitch. It is really fun to watch. My wife is a fairly good shot at less than 100 yards so I told her to keep an eye out and put down anything that doesn't belong. NeighborS dogs not included. Unfortunately due to health problems I can't get Ellie fixed that would solve alot of problems.
