Mossberg 500 Question

I bought a mossberg 500 tonight. It has a stellar camo paint job. Its not realtree, but kinda old school. There is no way a regular person painted it. Did 500's ever come with an older style military camo paint job? Either way, it is in great shape, no scratches, no dings, taken apart it has no buildup, sling with swivel studs, ammo holder, and it is the 28" barrel/3" field gun. I am wanting a round about year of it. The slide/pump is the skinnier ribbed kind, not the newer bulkier solid kind. Does anyone know about when they switched the slide shape?

By the way it is drilled and tapped. Dont know if they have always done that, but thats one of the many reasons I LOVE a mossy 500 over other pump guns. To top it off a friend of mine let me have it for $120!

if it was a contract gun, then chances are it wouldnt have had the 28" vented barrel. most contrace shotties come with either the 18 or 20" and have for some time. but for the forend, its hard to say when the switches were made. i actually have an old as one from the late 60's that has a single action arm and came from the detroit police department that likely saw use in the riots in those years.

you could write mossberg and give them the serial # and they should be able to give you a close year of production.

Sounds a lot like the one I bought my son for Christmas. It is from the eighties. You can call and get the owners manual with the serial number and find out the year.
