Tenkara fishing

Anyone have any experience with Tenkara fishing? I saw a guy fishing with a Tenkara rod on the red river during a canoe trip a few weeks back. He was wearing out panfish. The idea is very appealing to me. Many of the rods can be broken down into a small package, no reel, just lightweight rod, line and a fly. I'd like to add a set up to my backpacking gear for small rivers and creeks. Ultralight and easy to carry.

I thought of WD-40 and his new found trout addiction, this would be just the ticket on those FTCKY streams.

I'm just getting started in Tenkara. So far, I've not even wetted a fly, but I'm hoping to this weekend.

There is a TON of great info on Tenkara, plus some of the best deals I've found on rods, lines & flies, here > http://tenkaraflyfish.webs.com/

I've got the Fountainhead Caddis 330 rod with the 5:5 action. I am amazed at how delicate it is! I fly fish with furled leaders & I love their soft flexibility, so I decided to go with a furled Tenkara line also. I'll see how that plays out, I guess.

Like you, I love the simplicity of the system. A rod that collapses to 21" & weighs about 2 oz, no reel, a simple line & a fly.

Sounds interesting. I'll have to look into it.

Tenkara huh? I have a personal policy NOT to eat anything I can't pronounce or read on a menu. I just learned T-i-l-a-p-i-a! Now Tenkara....

Cheers

That is really neat. Reminds me of when I was a kid I would tie line to sticks.

Dolomite

Right. Looks like a 21st century version of the segmented bamboo pole I had as a kid. Looks way simpler than traditional fly fishing.

Thanks for the link Rob. Let me know how you like the set up. I don't have the advantage of fly fishing experience. I did give it a go in Alaska, but quickly switched back to spinning rods after a few frustrating weeks.

Those rods Rob linked are nice. All in for less than $100 isn't bad, either. I can really think of a lot of uses for a setup like that.
