Well, I'm going out tonight...

Recommended Posts

I have been a Reserve Deputy Sheriff with the Sheriff's Dept. since February. After firearms training, wrestling with other officers in the dirt and dust and hours in training, I'm going out on the road with another deputy tonight. Kinda excited to be out on the road. I've had several hours in a police car but never as a deputy. Hopefully I don't meet any of you tonight. Haha

I use to help train reserve officers at a former department so I'll say what I would tell them. Get your law books (traffic & criminal codes) read one front to back then read the other front to back and repeat. Learn all you can about search and seizure and ask questions from experienced officers. Try to be safe and not get sued.

This. When I was a LEO, I paid for the PBA legal defense. It's well worth the investment. It's primarily the worry about getting sued that has kept me from taking a reserve job. Wear your body armor and wear your seat belt. As many cops are killed in traffic crashes as by gunfire.

Best advice I ever recieved was from a Wilson County deputy: "Take advantage of every bathroom break you get". Sounds like solid advice. Good luck! I have always wanted to be a reserve officer, but in my area they have gotten rid of the program.
