Smith and Wesson 686 6" - Sight options?

I love my new 686, but don't care for the sight picture. I'm wanting more of a target sight. I've never changed the sights on a gun, so this is uncharted waters for me.

Right now, it has a black ramp front sight with a red square. Back sight is a black blade with a small white squared U outline.

Suggestions?

CT laser sights are dead on and work great for me. The existing factory iron sights are excellent for target shooting IMO.

Those are target sights. What do you not like about them, or what do want to be different? You can spend a lot of money, but I doubt you find better target sights.

blacked out my6" 586 sights, I'm still a black on black sight guy unless it has a red dot on it..

I don't have any proof that colored inserts do this for every one but for me it seemed they ,colored inserts changed my POI (or how I viewed the sights) depending on the lighting conditions...

try some Birchwood Casey spray sight black and see if it works for you then it is a simple blade swap in the rear and black epoxy replacement up front..

I've owned a bunch of S&W wheel gun's, to include a couple of 686's when they first came out and wish I'd kept every one of them. That said I've never liked the red insert in the ramp front sight or white outline rear sight's and much prefer all black sights. Since your's is a 6" model you can replace the front sight with non ramped or partridge style gold bead sight. They make a huge difference but are a challange with leather holster's.

To clarify, this will be my range / target gun.

Guess it depends on what you don't like about the sights. Surprising so many folk like black on black. What would one look for, aligning black-on-black against a black sillhouette target? Better eyes than mine. I want to put fiberoptics on all of mine, at least on the front.

Am not criticizing people who like black-on-black. Envious that people can see em. Benton, you shoot at Prentice Cooper some. What makes me want fiber optics is shooting from underneath the shade of that shelter in the afternoon with the sun in one's eyes. Red dots or fiberoptics are the only thing I can see worth beans in that situation.

I guess I do prefer black sights for target shooting, now that I think about it. How do I go about making sure the sights I buy are right for the gun? I shopped around online and there are so many options, it kinda boggled my mind.

Also, are there special tools required for changing them out?
