Romney - Biden Victory Possible

Unlikely, but possible.

Should electoral votes end in a tie, and there are several scenarios where that could happen if this thing comes down to as close as it seems right now, the House elects the prez and the Senate elects the Veep.

Hell, we're gotten to such an absurd political situation, maybe it would be a fitting outcome.

I saw a poll today with Romney ahead of Obama by 5% with 4% undecided and 3% "other". That's gotta be a good sign considering the smear campaign has been in Romney's direction for the most part.

Gallup has them both at 46% right now. This is going to take every vote we can muster to get Obama out of office.

I saw a pol yesterday that said Obama was ahead by 5 or 6%. Not trying to argue or anything, but that's impressive if it changed that quickly.

Independents in a handful of states elect the president. If the situation among those few million people is that they don't like either candidate, and they dislike them near equally, then no telling which way it goes. If campaigns could somehow locate the few voters that really matter and pay them $1000 each to buy their votes, it might save a bunch of campaign money. Dad said back in 1930's rural AL on election day his momma didn't let him go near polling places on election day because both sides were handing out moonshine and ceegars to buy votes (bone-dry counties by the way). After a few drinks political disagreements tended to get more physical than verbal. :)

I used to talk to pollsters but no more. Have seen news bits that it has become more difficult for pollsters to get people to talk to them. If equal numbers of D-leaners and R-leaners quit talking to pollsters then the polls remain useful. If one side has quit talking more than the other side, then the polls are worthless. Except for morale boosting and propaganda purposes. There may even be poor weak-minded souls who will read a poll and vote for the likely winner.

A really good poll depends on cooperation. Statistically speaking you can get a really good estimate of the entire population with a surprisingly small sample, but the usual way to get a high-confidence poll is to use an excellent selection criteria, and then among those few thousand pre-selected, you need to sweet-talk every one of them into talking to you. If you can't get responses from the carefully-chosen representative set, it blows big statistical holes in confidence of the results.

I look at the polls with a lot of skepticism. Depends on the question, the sample and the pollster. To

me, some of them are only good for trends, anyway.

Oops, Biden's still pulling ahead. :D

Just got back from the range. That Springfield is awesome, so are the Smiths, but I need a nap, also.

Dick Morris says he uses "likely" voters in his polling, where the others use "registered" or anyone in their polling.

I don't even know who polls are accurate at all anymore. They're still done primarily by phone, and don't include the growing % of folks who no longer have a land line, yes?

We're screwed regardless of who is elected.

Maybe your personal interests may be extended or delayed for another four years. It really doesn't matter.

I don't think polls are good for the process. Ain't saying they should be outlawed, but manipulated polls also manipulate donations, voter enthusiasm and partisan turnout. Convince enough voters that their side just can't win because a poll is so lopsided, then they will stay home and it will be a self-fulfilling prophesy. Same deal for the donors. Not many people will keep sending in either small or large donations if polls get lopsided enough.

I also don't like exit polls and "calling" states when not even a majority of votes have been certified. "Calling" states on the east coast can affect voter turnout in states still voting. Just tell everybody the day after, who won after the actual votes were counted, not after some pollsters have decided who won.

So nobody is interested in the actual topic, possibility of a tie?

There are 8 scenarios where this could happen. And it HAS happened twice in US history.

I'm interested. Break it down for us.

Better to read link in first post:

You can click through the 8 combinations that would result in one.

That's how we could conceivably have Romney as Prez and Biden as Veep. Or whoever becomes Obama's running mate if he dumps Joe (which I still think is a possibility if BHO gets way behind, sort of a Palin type hail mary pass).

It would be a hoot if something like that happened these days, wouldn't it? Both Romney and Biden would

forever be looking over their shoulders. :D

Romney-Biden would be interesting if nothing else. Perhaps Biden would be assigned vital national security duties which must be carried-out from an undisclosed location? :)

Reckon Hillary as veep would be a game-changer? Lots of otherwise normal people seem to like the woman. Why I haven't a clue.

Can't see it. Yeah, keep your friends close and your enemies closer, but not THAT close. Talk about a feller looking over his shoulder, BHO would have the worst crick in the neck in history.

It would make for an interesting situational comedy to say the least.... maybe ABC will pick it up and stop putting cookie cutter crap on the air. I can see it now, Biden hiding Romney's magic underwear... Romney replacing Biden's dimentia medication with estrogen pills. I like where this could potentially go.

It will likely come down to the Independent vote. The country is so polarized right now that Dems and Republicans will be firmly sided with their own parties this time around. The Republicans need to get as many voters to the polls as possible this time.

I have always considered myself as an Independent in the past. I have voted Democrat in prior elections. But this time around I am voting straight Republican. Seems that these days the Democratic party is fully embracing socialism. I want no part of it. I seriously doubt I will ever vote Democrat again, period.

My grandparents are democrats, have been for many years. Even they, though, refuse to vote for.. as my grandma put it... "The black Stalin."

I love my grandparents, what is left of them.

You're Grandma is one of the few remaining Democrats of a better time, Daniel. She's also right.

" The Black Stalin"; a fitting title for Barry.

The main argument I hear for voting for Romney is to keep Obummer for appointing 2 more liberal S.C justices.

But Hell, we can't even trust the so called "conservative" ones. Between the ruling on healthcare and now this, I don't see what difference Romney will make.

If Michael Bloomberg calls himself an Independent??? That's just an insult.

If he is an Independent then I guess all liberals are Independents now.

Every time I see Michael Bloomberg's name I feel like hitting something. Maybe I'll just put a poster of him up on the wall and throw darts at it.

On the polling.... I still have one land line at the house and I've been getting tons of polling calls. I'm guessing since fewer and fewer folks have phones at home anymore those with them are getting inundated with calls. And you sort of have to think who would still have a home phone? I think it probably throws off any statistical relevancy.

My usual method for answering is to tell them I'm an independent, they always ask more questions if you're not affiliated. You can sometimes figure out which candidate is making the call. Then I try and screw the results with my answers. Hopefully the person paying for the polling is loosing their ass (incumbent) or at least the results are skewing their figures. I figure the more I can F-up their numbers the better. The only real poll that counts anyway is on election day. I always tell them I voting for the big O.
