Bullet plating revisited

Recommended Posts

Well I finally decided to give it another try.

I drilled a square rod for the bullets to sit in nose first. It take about 30 minutes to get a decent plating of copper on it.

Here are a few pictures:

On the left is unsized and on the right pushed through a .309" sizer. I guess the plating is adding about .001"-.002" to the OD.

And a dummy round:

The shiny spots are from the bullets brushing against others. Out of the solution they are pink.

Been thinking about this since your first post on the subject. Has a couple of ideas to try someday(!) when I find the time for such a project:

1. Would standing the bullets upright on a metal plate (cathode) at the bottom of the solution work? Seems that would leave an unplated base similar to FMJ.

2. Casting zinc bullets (requires a steel mold and hotter temps) - plating these should yield some dandy rifle bullets.

3. Any more ideas on tumbling, polishing, etc?
