Man makes guns with a 3D printer

We’ve seen no shortage of 3D-printed masterpieces over the last several months, but this is reportedly the first time that someone has used the technology to create a firearm. It comes from a users on the AR15 message boards, a community for gun fanatics. He used a Stratasys 3D printer to create a .22 pistol. And yes, it actually works; it can shoot bullets just like a normal gun....

Nothing illegal about making your own guns. As a matter of fact ntohing wrong with selling a gun you have made. Problem comes in when you make a gun with intent to sell or sell guns as a source of income without a license.

Apparently it was only the stripped lower he printed, but that is still pretty awesome.

Oh, did not know that. I figured the ATF would come up with some "constructive" somesuch to go after him.

If he decided to sell it, would it require serial numbers and model info be on it? Or would he not be a manufacturer, so it would not be required? How does that work?

Although a serial number is not required it is recommended. A serial number is not required to sell. Before 1968 a lot of guns did not have serial numbers.

Selling a gun without a serial number is no different than selling a gun with a serial number. As long as the gun's configuration is legal and the buyer is allowed to possess it there is nothing illegal.

Now it is illegal to deface or remove a serial number once it is on a firearm.
