Night Vision

Recommended Posts

I am going to invest in a night vision device. It will have to be Gen 1 for financial reasons. I know next to nothing about them. Don't know whether to go rifle scope or monocular or binocular. Don't know what brands to look at. Any suggestions?

Well, if you talk to anybody really into NV they will tell you real quick to save your money if you can only afford gen 1. If you check over on AR15.com they get down right snobby about it. Are they right, I don't think so. Yes it would be nice to drop $3500 on a great gen3 unit and man they do look nice. I've got a buddy with two of them, and they are the cats meow. But I don't have the mullah or the inclination to drop a wad like that on something I'd not use every day!

I ended up buying a Yukon unit about 2 years ago. Retail was $400 I found someone wanting to get rid of it for $250 so I snapped it up. Does it work like the gen3 units, heck no. Does it work, heck yes! Mine is a 1.5x scope and it's good out to about 100-125 yards on a dog sized object. It's sort of big and heavy but it didn't set me back 2-3K and it does exactly what I need for it to. I can't really get a longer shot off around here anyway. (Keep in mind using NV for hunting is strictly verboten here in TN, nothing said is meant to suggest anyone has actually hunted with such a device here. Some of us may periodically travel to TX where using NV for hunting is permitted.)

I tell you what I might be inclined to save up for, and thats the Pulsar http://www.midwayusa.com/product/212793/pulsar-digisight-n550-digital-night-vision-rifle-scope-45x-50mm-multi-reticle-option-with-integral-weaver-style-mount-matte

I've not seen one in person but have read a number of good reviews. BTW, I found that reviews of the lower priced NV devices are not all that reliable since may of the reviewers don't have experience with NV in general so they are easily impressed. If you can only afford gen1, go for it. There will be a market for used ones when you get ready to move up.
