New Job Responsibilities

Soooo, things happen, and hard work is sometimes appreciated. I have been the QA Manager for three years (until last Thursday) with the company I work for. As of 2pm Thursday, I have assumed the role of Plant Manager for our two manufacturing facilities in Chattanooga (approximately 350 people total employment / 75mm in annual sales). I am very excited to have the opportunity, and nervous at the same time. Lot of responsibility, but I have a great support staff that I have already worked with during these years. Just wanted to share, and am always open to advice.

Thanks, man. Little nerve racking. I have been management for the last ~7 years, but never more than a group of 30 people. This job will require some serious trust and delegation to the management staff. They know their jobs well, so it should make for an easy transition, but I feel a lot of sleepless nights coming on.......

Congadulations on the promotion! It's always a good feeling to know you haven't reached your ceiling.

Good luck with the new position, sounds like quite the jump.

Thanks. I am 36 now, so thankfully, I hadn't started questioning my ceiling yet. It is a good feeling, though, now that I think about it.

Well, I'm happy and sad for you. I'm glad you have a good job, and I'm glad you have been promoted. I hope you got a little more fundage to go with it! I hate the stress you'll be under though. But hey, figure in all the people who are unemployed and the stress might lessen a touch.

I'll offer advice based off of your very first sentence. There is a famous quote that says "A pat on the back, though only a few vertebrae removed from a kick in the pants, is miles ahead in results". An effective leader should always remember to recognise and reward others good efforts, not just crack the whip when there is a problem. A simple one liner email, or a quick "Hey bob, thanks for getting that done for me, you're awesome!" can make a big difference in someone's attitude about their work, which in turn can make a positive influence on everyone else they interact with. If they aren't happy, they will do the minimum amount of work to keep management off their case, nothing more.

I work on the lower end of plastic manufacturing, process tech/supervision, and must say it's one the better industries to be in.

That's certainly not the lower end. Process Techs make the world go 'round.... You in Thermoforming, Injection Molding, etc. ?

As someone that works in Aerospace Quality, I would think Plant Manager would be less stressful. :)

Agreed, as QA Manager (as well as the primary HACCP manager) for a food contact packaging facility, it is constant stress. Audits, customer complaints, more audits, production hates your guts, more audits, customers threatening to "sue your a$$ off" (actually received that call more than once for some of our Injection Molded products that were "shorts", and they swore they bit it off and swallowed it), more audits, some customer complaints, sales hates your guts, marketing hates your guts, and more audits. Did I mention audits? Now, I get to worry about all that plus some. Piece of cake!
