Fort Campbell Trout fishing

Folks, we've all heard about the good rivers and trout streams that vein their way across the state of Tennessee and offer some very fine fishing opportunitys.

I'm not going to give up many secrets here, but, there is some real good trout fishing opportunitys tucked away in the streams located on Fort Campbell Military base. One of the best being on the old Clarksville Base area.

To trout fish Fort Campbell you will need a Tennessee or Kentucky Fishing license, Trout Stamp and a Fort Campbell Fishing permit. Area assignments are required and are obtainable at the MWR Hunting and Fishing Unit. PH (270)798-2175

The trout streams are stocked on a regular basis by the TWRA, USFWS and the Kentucky Department of WIldlife. TWRA and USFWS stock 700 to 800 pounds of Rainbow trout at the 3 release sites. These are hatchery fish from the Dale Hollow National Fish Hatchery, and the average size trouts are 9-12 inch rainbows (a few are 14), 6-8 inch Brook Trout and some nice Browns.

There are alot of "holdover" fish to be had, as many fish are escaping capture and are growing quite well, a few trout are showing up in the creel that are 19-24 inch. Very impressive!

Hey I wanna fish ft.campbell for trout. I hear they have some big holdovers. Also how is the fishing during the cold weather or in these winter months? Besides cold... also whats a good bait, ill be fly fishing and use a light action rod. Also does those rivers flooding ruin the fish populations?

The streams were closed due to deer hunting, and I believe they are open now. There are some real nice holdovers to be had in both Brown and Rainbow Trout. I like ultralight spinning tackle with a tiny roostertail spinner. When fly fishing, I've had good luck with a floating black ant and a tiny sinking scud. If you tie your own, those are pretty easy to tie up. I highly recommend waders as those spring fed streams can get plenty cold even in hot weather. The following items are required to trout fish on post; TN Fishing Permit, TN Trout Stamp, Fort Campbell Fishing Permit and an area assignment which is required for each trip. This late in the year I would just wait until March 1st to get your stuff and go. That's when the new permits come out and you'll save yourself a bunch of money by waiting.

 

During heavy rains the streams will flood and get nasty, but settle down real quick. The fish don't leave, they just dig in and hold tight behind every rock available.

Seen this post and decided to try my luck. Just curious which places are best in this area. I went out by the water pump and seen a few big ones but they didn't want to bite.  The old clarksville base, is that where GRN PLT is held at?

Old Clarksville Base and especially Kinser's Pond holds a decent amount of Rainbow and Brown Trout. We had a guy the other day that had a 19 inch Brown Trout. We figure that fish is going into his 3rd year in the stream. There are some good ones to be had...just have to work for them!

Go to the Clarksville Base stream access and drive past it (over the bridge) go about a 1/2 mile (give or take) and watch to the left.

Yes it has. The time is running out for the Caney to be productive. I just started fishing it this year and it's been fun. I've not had a great day yet but I have also only focused on trying to catch big brown trout.

Nice Fish! I am super jealous right now. How do you suggest fishing the Caney? Boat or on foot? Rent a canoe or bring your own. Thanks Ray

Low water you can wade a good bit of it. I take the Yak out and fish the dam area. You can float it but you will need two trucks because you will never make it back up to the ramp at the dam. There are multiple locations to put in at and float. Happy hollow is one of them plus I think there is a shuttle that picks up and drops off there too. The cool thing about the caney is you could catch big browns like that, Nice Rainbows, Walleye and big Striper.
