Question for the Police Officers

A good friend of mine works for the Kingsport Police Department and in passing had mentioned a reservists position. He didn't know a whole lot about the program but knew it was unpaid and consisted of a 12-hour commitment per month. I have always been interested in police work but in all honesty wasn't willing to leave a job that is easy and better paying (just being honest). I still have the drive and interest and would be willing to give up at least one day a month to help out. I know, at least in my area, the police force is understaffed as it is and they could use a hand. If any members have some information that would be very helpful. I intend on calling up to the justice department Monday morning to get some more information but thought this would also be a good place to ask.

I remember Bob Camponovo at our NRA instructors class specifically saying you want to avoid that kind of thing. It brings only increased liability.

If you really want it I guess go for it.

I'll have to agree.

I have a friend/co-worker who thought this would be a good idea, until all the officers started getting busted for having sex with the female inmates. Needless to say, he didn't stick around long after.

I think specifically for this position it is strictly patrol. If I understand it correctly, you are a sworn officer and the biggest difference is you are not allowed to drive the cruiser since reservists don't actually attend the academy. Thanks for the information. From the sound of it, this may not be the best idea then.

Check into it before you decide, most departments have a good reservist program. Our county gives them alot of responsibility, after they have been there awhile. If you love law enforcement work, but can't take the pay cut, then this is the way to go.

Don't listen to people that havent been there and done that, rumor and hearsay don't count.

I'm Not a cop, but this is what I know..

check with your PD human resourses and ask if they have a police reserve/auxillary program.

You will not be POST certified, a lot of small dept. use the reserves to augment their police force due to budget constraints (hey, it takes a lot of mony to train & equipment)

you are usually required to work so many hours per week or month...and can set your own hours...

you will probably not be on patrol by yourself, more than likley you will be partenerd with a full time officer. I have heard that some small depts will let you patrol alone, but again, it depends on the depts policy, and the city's insurance...

but again, check with your local police dept and see if they have a program... then talk to whoever is in charge of it...and see where it takes you.
