Springfield TRP operator

I've only ran HKs and never owned a 1911 before, but I'm getting the itch. Im wanting to get a full-size 1911 and thinking about the Springfield TRP operator. Anybody have one?

Had one, awesome gun. I personally woudn't buy one as my first 1911. I would look at a little less expensive version like the loaded target, or shoot a few different models until you determine what type you want. The TRP is an exceptional platform, but it's not for everyone, especially considering the cost. A lot of people who buy TRP and higher models end up turning them into safe queens because they don't want to scratch or wear on them too bad. I personally carry my 1911 every day, so that's where my input comes from. In that price range there are a TON of options: trophy match, gold cup, dan wesson's...the list goes on. Ultimately it comes down to function. What will you be doing with it most?

This would not be for carry as it is too big for conceal carry for my preference. I would like to get into IDPA eventually and use it for home and range. I want a railed 1911 so I can run a light.

I'm probably going to buy a used one so I'd like to get a relaible 1911. Also I'm not looking for a safe queen as I'm looking to run this gun.

I just saw a post by Metalhead where he was selling his trp operator last month. Looks like I just missed it.

I've carried Springfields for a long time, used as my regular sidearm for all types of assignments and missions. It's also easy to get the custom shop to do what you want done to them also. I've had quite a few Loaded models that I had the custom shop do accuracy work to, not expensive at all and have left several with friends I made in different locations around the globe.

The TRP has several "upgrades" built in and it shoots fine, I personally don't like 1911's that have rails.

I have to say one of my favorite pistols is my TRP Operator with FLR - you have made a good choice as a first .45.

exactly what I'm looking for.

They pop up every once an a while on GB, I was looking to get another one but got bit by the class 3 bug instead. Good luck in finding one, I'll keep an eye out for you.

I have a friend who is an FBI Agent on one of the "many' regional SWAT teams. He is not a lawyer or accountant. He is former US Army and big city LEO. He is the best handgun shooter I have ever seen in person. I had to carry a handgun for work for nearly 3 decades. He has a couple of duty SA Pros with rails and one for himself as a non-duty gun. He told me a few weeks ago that even though he is faster and more accurate with the SA 1911s than he was with his beloved G19 I used to shoot alongside, he said that his work SAs are often "down" due to not being able to hold up to the amount of rounds he shoots for practice. Fortunately these hard used guns are government guns and he doesn't have to pay for rework and rebuilds. Which seems to say to me if this is going to be primarily a range or bar b que gun then it sounds like a good one. However, if this is going to be a using gun that your life may depend on then you might consider having two or more. I like Glock 9mms but I have 8 of them, just in case.

The TRP is a great gun. Have had mine for several years. Rarely shoot it because 9mm is a lot cheaper than .45 and I generally carry HKs, so that's what I shoot most.

The TRP is the cheapest Springfield would own. I say that because I wouldn't own a 1911 without a checkered frontstrap. And if you buy one and decide you want that later, it's very expensive to get done. Once you get used to one with it, it's hard to live without it.

The only complaint I have with TRPs is that you can't get a railed TRP in stainless. Mine is the Armory Coat with the rail. Would love to have a stainless steel if it was available with a rail.

You could also look at the springfield loaded operator instead of the TRP if you were interested in a cheaper price point but still want a railed 1911, if you decide you don't want a rail you should check the classified section *hint hint* ;)

I hear ya. I love my HKs. Used to carry USP CT but switched to P2000sk Lem 9mm. I love it for carry.

My TRP has been an excellent pistol, but I'm glad I didn't get one with the rail.

They look sexy but it sure limits your holster options, especially if you're looking to use it for an EDC.

This is one of the main reasons I don't want a railed gun.

I carry a V1 LEM P30 daily and love it. First time in a long time I'm not in the hunt for some kind of gun.

My TRP has a rail, but it's the half rail. Which is all you are going to use anyway. My brother has the full rail operator. He never carries it so it doesn't matter, but I would imagine holsters are few and far between. Also the full rail adds a bunch of heft. I must say they shoot great. That extra few ounces on the front really helps hold the muzzle down.

Loved my TRP Operator flr. Just wanted something more at the time. Now have found a source for FLR railed frames. It's time to start getting the parts together for a couple more customs. Might do them in 10mm. The SA is a very good buy in any of their 1911 style guns. Very good value for the price.

Cheers,
