I am definitely getting her some trigger time. But I am thinking a 9mm semi auto could be quite effective with right round. Anyone no where to pick up good used one locally (central Tenn). Hell, I ride a motorcycle(less gas $) for my daily transportation;so, any where in state would be within reach.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet or not but...

Why not attend the June middle TN Meet & Shoot (see the events forum) and bring your wife along? There would be plenty of chances for her to shoot various handguns in various calibers and find one that you and she both like.

You have voiced concern over whether a .45ACP handgun would be too much gun for her. My wife's only complaint when shooting my 1911 is that the G10 micarta grips bite into her hands. She's never suggested that the recoil is too much. Actually I've found that the .45ACP has a more gentle push to it than, say, a .40SW handgun. The recoil is not anywhere near as snappy as a .40SW and probably marginally more so than a 9mm.

Food for thought.

I'm just saying that "revolvers never fail" is misleading. There are plenty of examples of Rugers (and I'm a big Ruger fan) where the cylinder / barrel alignment came from the factory outside of the acceptable tolerances.

They do fail. They do not have the common place jams and limp wrist issues that semi-autos do.

If they came bad from the factory then they didnt fail, they weren't serviceable to begin with. Big difference.

In any manufactured item there is a tolerance level of rejects, out of specs, etc etc. When you take that level into effect it is accurate to say revolvers never fail. Now I personally have had mine lock up in competition after one round. Things can happen to them. That's why a backup is always a good idea. But they are far less susceptible to failure, especially operator error, than semis.

wow. i believe that is what i just said. no need to explain tolerances to the mechanical engineer who mentioned them in his post. :D Similarly, arguing semantics of whether a failure is one not working (from the factory) or one not working (lockup) is silly.

But, thanks for re-agreeing with me.

Actually it isnt. But it isn't worth fighting it out here.

So lets agree that if you want something with the lowest chance of failure, buy a revolver.

Or a single-shot shotgun... those are even more reliable. :D

fixed, with less aiming required.

I just found a buddy needing some extra cash and having one to many shotguns. So, I just picked up a Mossberg 500 12ga. I still like the idea of having a pistol. So, I will be checking out some of the shops locally.

For HD I like my 92FS. It has always worked for me. I shoot it regularly and I know it well. I do keep a Mini14 ready as well.
