"Inaccurately attributed quotes are the bane of the internet" - Abraham Lincoln

Bahahahahaha!!

Phbt. Lincoln freed the slaves with the 13th amendment and enslaved all Americans with the 14th amendment. With the 14th amendment he also elevated corporations to the same level as humans in the eyes of the Constitution and is greatly to blame for many issues we face now. Not to mention that he proved that State rights mean nothing to the .gov.

Yup. Lincoln gets lots of love but he wasn't worth the $5 bill he haunts. He just proved that big government rules over independent thought.

I have more respect for Lincoln as a Vampire hunter than his accomplishments as a president.

It's actually better since it is not Lincoln's.

Amen to that!

Where we are today began with Mr. Lincoln, and it's sad.

Here's a real Abe Lincoln quote for ya':

"I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in anyway the social and political equality of the white and black races - that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race."

Maybe it isn't so bad that much of modern society's thinking is different from his.

Oh, and a bonus quote from a letter written in 1862 to Horace Greeley, editor of the New York Tribune, by the 'Great Emancipator' showing how he really felt about emancipation, Lincoln stated:

"If I could save the Union without freeing any slaves, I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it, and if I could do it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would also do that"

And he followed that up in reality. The Emancipation Proclamation did not free one, single slave. It only applied to slaves in states or portions of states that were still in rebellion (over which Lincoln and the U.S. government had no say at the time.) That would be like Obama signing a proclamation declaring that women in Syria are all now to be considered free and equal citizens - it meant nothing and its only purpose was to gain support for his side in the war. The Emancipation Proclamation left slaves in non-rebelling states or states/portions of states that had already been 'reclaimed' in slavery.

But the Civil War was all about Lincoln freeing the slaves. Riiiiight.

Sorry, the whole 'Lincoln was one of our greatest presidents' thing is a sore point with me. Every time I hear someone say that I want to vomit.

The phrase "class warfare" was first coined by Karl Marx in his Communist Manifesto, which was first published in 1848 but wasn't translated into English until 1872, seven years after Lincoln's assassination.

History teaches us that Lincoln was justified in unilaterally suspending the US Constitution because his motives were pure. Except that that's toothpaste that can never be put back in the tube. That Lincoln was deified rather than crucified for violating that most inviolable of documents set a precedent that continues to enable presidents to propose (and congress to pass) wholly extraconstitutional legislation like Ubamacare, and allows SCOTUS to countenance the killing of the unborn by finding that ruling otherwise would violate some whimsical right to privacy alluded to in the penumbra of the constitution. All of which stems from a history that's been rewritten in an effort to shift the blame for the needless killing of more than half a million Americans to the shoulders of the white southerner.

The principle reason for the sorry state of decay we find our government in today does not lie with Ubama, Reid and Pelosilly, it lies in the mythical Lincoln depicted in our history books.

Yeah, ask any native Kansan - and remember, we got the crap kicked out of us by both sides - how great Lincoln was. We'll truthfully respond, "Not very!" And even Lincoln himself later admitted that his line, during the Gettysburg Address, about all men being created equal did not - in his mind - include blacks or <American> Indians.

Great quote wrongly attributed to a not-so-great president.
