Dickson Gun Show

Recommended Posts

I am planning to go to the gun show at Dickson, TN this weekend. I am a gun show newbie, I have only been to one, and that was a few years ago. I wanted to go to more, but I was laid-off of work for over 2 years and did not have much money to spend.

I am back to work now, and have money burning a whole in my pocket. I wanted to attend the show in Nashville last week but, I was asked (compelled) to work overtime. I have a few questions...

Is the gun show at Dickson worth attending?

Are there any tips I can get from veteran show goers?

What are some things to look for when buying a used revolver?

The Dickson show is small, but not much different than most I've seen. Vendors asking full retail on most things, but can be bargained with in many cases. The fairgrounds building where this is held may or may not be air conditioned. It could be sweltering inside there, but you occasionally see someone get a bargain.

When I'm shopping, I usually get an idea of an items worth by shopping it online before i go to the show. Just saying.

Let's hope the temperature is at least tolerable this weekend. I can stand the heat in the kitchen but, not the oven.

I have a few things in mind, and I know what I am willing to pay for them. If something else catches my eye, I will definitely use my phone to do some price checking. It is my first smart phone and I got it less than a week ago. I am loving it.

Current technology certainly makes it harder for a seller to get one over on a buyer. You gotta love having a world of information at your fingertips.

smartphone and/or ipad has resulted in many gun show trips for me where I walked away empty handed - thankfully. Its hard to overcome that impulse buy scenario sometimes

I have a question, what app or website does everybody use for comparing prices? I have used Bud's, Gunbroker, Cheaper than Dirt and CDNN's websites

well it's probably going to rain all day so I might make the trip afterall.

back from the show - I wouldn't advise anyone to make the trip or waste the money. Only thing interesting that I saw was a guy selling a golani galil w/ 4 mags for $650. Was in great shape too. Other than that everything else was blah.

Made the 2 hour one way trip on saturday, and wasn't impressed. Then got stuck on I40 for 50 minutes at a dead stop. Went back on sunday to picked up something I shouldn't have passed on saturday (another 4 hour round trip), and the guy apparently never set up sunday. That towns apparently bad luck for me, you won't see me at it again.

I was just talking to the guys at D&T arms about this on saturday. I too was a gun show newb at one point and thought they were fun to attend. the downside is that there are seldom good deals to be had and most of what you see is the same run of the mill overstock stuff that dealers have laying around. I have never found a gunshow where I saw a deal I couldn't walk away from. Plus, I like buying from gunshops because I know they are going to be around tomorrow. If I buy something local I know where to go back to if there is an issue. With a fold up taveling gun show, you may be relying on the manufacturer, and for me, that is just not a safe bet all of the time.

You generally aren't going to find a deal with the vendors, haggling late on the last day is your best shot. The deals come from the individuals that come to trade/sell, there are deals to be had. I went to this show and the Nashville show. The nashville show was terrible, it was hot, no AC, and everything was over priced. The Dickson show was obviously smaller and priced a little better, especially ammo, JJ Farmer always makes good deals at his booth and he's a genuine guy. Still couldn't sell my 1911 though ... lol.

Yeah, I usually end up going to the shows to buy accessories and/or ammo only. This way I pay entry/parking instead of a bunch of shipping fees from different places. Typically save the actual gun purchases to local or online vendors.
