Had mine in 2007. All went well. Rough couple of weeks, very painful, but I don't like pain meds. After that, no problems. You'll do fine. Just take it slow and easy.

Had three , 1st was small no problem then 2nd they put a 10cm. pc. of mesh felt like mule kicked me in gut ,last was groin not to bad just a lot of bruising looked like he was using my package for a hand hold all were laparocopic. dont wait is the best thing dont let it get bigger the more they do the more it may hurt,

yup bilateral inguinal hernia back in 1993. It really suxed bad. But I think the new techniques are much better nowadays and allow for much faster healing than the old school surgery.

Off topic and I don't mean to make light of the OP, but it always seemed kinda' backwards to me to call 'em hernias and hysterectomies - seems like it oughtta' be hisnias and hersterectomies. :-\

I had one once. Sent it back to the factory because of defective workmanship.

Come to think of it, I saw an ad on TV a month or so ago that said if I'd send them 50 bucks, they'd send me something to consolidate my bills. So I wrote a check for $50.00 and sent it to 'em - two weeks later I got a big rubber band in the mail... :-\

Sincerely hope everyone's bumps, bulges and ruptures heal nicely and leave a scar to be proud of!

That is funny. I have never thought of that.

Back to the OP, the recovery period after a hernia repair depends greatly on how it is done. Do you know if it will be an "open" or "laparoscopic" repair? For a lap repair, many people will have them done on a Thursday or Friday and be back at work on Monday, provided their job does not require lifting and straining. The open repairs will put you down a little longer, like on the order of a week or more. The trade off is that the open repair generally has less risk of recurrence. You will be on lifting restrictions for a while with either repair. Either way, good luck to you, and I wish you a speedy recovery.

It's going to be open, doctor said I will be out of work for 4 weeks. My job requires moderate (30lbs or less) lifting and a lot of walking.

Well, I understand the open sucks a little more in the short run, but at least you have less of a chance of having to do it twice. Just treat it right, and don't risk doing something you are advised against like lifting or doing too mych too soon.

Man, I envy you! I was off four weeks when I had my gallbladder yanked and it was done laparoscopically - thing is, my tarps weigh 125 pounds each and I can pretty much count on tarping at least one load a week and sometimes as many as five or six.

Good luck!

Mine was open and that mesh stuff used, out for four days. Percocet for two days. Mine was bulging

like the size of a golf ball. I let it go for about five years before I had it dealt with. Out patient and no problem.

To show how things have changed, I had a congenital hernia fixed about 1958, was in the hospital for a week and have about a 7" scar. Had one fixed a couple of years ago, outpatient, 3"scar. no problem, and went back to work after about 3 days, but no lifting. Pay attention to the lifting restrictions even if you feel OK. I know 2 people that have ignored the restrictions and blew it back out. Much worse repair the second time.

I had an inguinal hernia (the kind in your groin) repaired in August 2010, on friday the 13th. A number of guys I work with had hernias repaired around the same time... it was really kinda weird there were so many at the same time.

The procedure itself really isn't a big deal. Outpatient surgery, took about half a day. The worst pre-surgery part was the antacid stuff they make you drink. It tastes horrible and you can't wash it down with anything. Yuck.

Mine was repaired with the mesh patch, which according to the doctor is basically gore-tex. My incision is about 3" long, just below my waist. The hernia itself was much lower down, but the doc said they do the incision up high because it heals much better.

I was very, very stiff for the first couple days. It's very hard to sit on the pot and wipe your arse when your left hip joint doesn't work. My (at the time) 2 yr old didn't understand why Daddy couldn't play or pick him up, and that jumping on Daddy wasn't such a good idea. DO NOT cough or laugh. It really, really hurts.

They gave me hydro's for the pain and I didn't like them. They made me loopy and itchy. I only took them for 2-3 days. I had very little bruising, some other guys looked like they'd been hit with a baseball bat.

I was moving around fine within a few days. My doc wasn't real strict with the "no lifting" stuff. He basically said, "if it hurts, don't do that. If you tear it again, I have to fix it again, so choose wisely." Some guys played basketball a couple days later.

The worst post-surgery part was the staples, they got real tender after about a week. He removed about half of them after the first week, then the other half after the 2nd week. They were replaced each time with the stickiest tape I've ever seen. Removing the tape wasn't real fun either.

I had phantom pains around the incision for several months afterward. Sometimes when I'd move in a odd way, sometimes when sitting still. Nothing severe, just enough to get your attention. Otherwise, it healed up fine.

My surgeon always had students around observing during pre and post-op visits and one during the procedure. During my 2nd post-op visit, the doc walked in with a girl who was 20 at the most (and kinda cute eyebrows_125.gif ). It was only after we chatted for a minute he told her why I was there. She was really embarrassed when I started undoing my pants and I tried real hard not to laugh.

Have had several, none were a big deal. Take a cane with you to the hospital. You'll need it getting out of the car at home. You'll be doubled over for a few days/week.

Had it done this morning.Doctor had to make a 6 inch incision because it was a large hernia,it had gotten down into my scrotum and entangled part of my bowel and bladder as well.I woke up in the recovery and the pain was pretty severe.3 hrs and 1 Loratap pill and 2 morophene shots later was released.Got a feeling I'm really gonna be sore tomorrow

I've been told it feels like a mule kicked you in the nuts. I hope yours feels better than that. Good luck to you.

Id recommend wearin a robe versus any kind of waistbanded pants for the 1st few days & keep it iced. Worse pain of my life. I had inguinal in 04, out for 2 wks. Can't say enough about overdoing it afterwards. I had phantom pains for 6mo because I pushedtoo hard too soon

Hang in there. It sucks, but will pass with time. Don't be afraid to milk it for all it's worth. :)
