The ammo for that revolver is very specific. It fires a 7.62 Nagant round. It's a weird looking round, the bullet is actually seated below the rim of the case. The way the Nagant works, it has to be made that way. When the hammer is cocked, the entire cylinder moves forward to form a gas seal. The cartridge mouth helps create the seal.

Here is some info on the ammo:

It is available, and not too expensive. You can even get dies to reload it. Some of the surplus stuff is corrosive, though, so just be aware you will need to be a bit more diligent with your cleaning and not let it sit after firing it.

Disclaimer: I do not own one of these guns, and have never fired one myself, but have heard they are a lot of fun to shoot.

Edit: OK, so in reading some myself, apparently the .32 S&W, .32 S&W Long and the .32 H&R Magnum will chamber, but may cause some issues. It's in the article referenced above.

It takes 7.62X38R and is a gas seal revolver. You can use modern ammo with modifications but if you check YouTube you will see that what you have when you are done really isn’t worth the investment. But Aim Surplus sells 7.62X38R ammo for them.

A lot of people run 32 long colt in them (a buddy of mine included), bulges all, and splits many of the cases. I would have to research it more before I fed it a steady diet of them.

im still doing more research but if i have too (which i probably will) i will hunt down and buy a 32acp conversion cylinder

I would just load up on surplus ammo now while it's available. Those conversion cylinders cost almost as much as the gun does.

Aim Surplus has it for like $319 for one can. Two or more drops the per can price to $300 each. That's the lowest I've seen, but I haven't really dug deep.

whats a good price on a spam can of 7.62x38?

Wideners and AIM are both around $320 plus shipping. It's a cheap gun to buy, but not a cheap round to shoot.

I've been using 9.0gr of AA#9 behind a 100gr plated flat point in a .32mag case. I get 1100fps and no pressure problems. The original service load for the Nagant is a 100gr jacketed bullet at 1100fps. The case distorts in the middle, but I still get about 5-6 reloads per case without any splitting.

I have used factory .32 H&R mag ammo for years and never seen a problem. I have also never heard of a Nagant revolver that had a problem from factory .32 mag ammo. These revolvers are pretty strong, and the pressures are still pretty low at only 21,000cup (about the same as .380 auto).

If you reload, using jacketed or plated bullets will reduce the amount of lead build-up you get in the barrel recess at the chamber end.

The PRVi and HotShot ammo is a very light target load. The good thing about that ammo is that the brass is boxer-primed and easily reloaded. Those cases with a 100gr bullet loaded to about 1100fps makes a nice shooter equal in power to the .38 Spl.

I was also looking into the Nagant revolver as it appeals to my taste. However i am at the range a lot and like to shoot my guns. So for that reason i have reconsidered and am now looking into a Taurus Model 82 in 38. Special. It's a good looking gun and recently the Brazilian Army has turned over a number of them, most selling for less than $200. It's worth a look.

That is a good looking weapon. SOG has them for 149.99 right now. Unfortunately, they aren't C&R eligible. :(
