Went out to the Gun Room in Lebanon TN yesterday just to poke around and talk to the guys and maybe do some shooting. I have been looking at getting a wheelgun for some time now. I noticed they had the Charter arms patriot in 327 mag. The price was right and the guys at the Gun Room were a pleasure to work with again. I decided to pick it up and take it home.

I just wanted to find out what you guys and gals thought of the 327 mag round.

Very awesome round, especially if you reload. They just don't make enough pistols in .327 mag in my opinion.

Very nice round, it is very, very close to the 32-20 Winchester of yesteryear except with modern bullet designs. I have also erally liked Charter Arms revolvers since getting my first in 44 special. They are bare bones guns that just plain work.

Sorry, but I don't share the others' sentiments. OK round if you're just going to shoot targets, but for SD? You'd be better off with a service caliber.

.327 was a solution to a problem that didn't exist. That's why you don't see more firearms chambered for it.

Is it perfect? No, but it serves a purpose. I was told one time that a 327mag is one of the biggest threats in concealable calibers to my Level III body armor and there's 6 rounds of it. Supposedly the slimmer a round with extreme velocity the greater the penetration to armor. Ever since I started reloading I have had the itch for a 327 but I haven't found the right gun chambered in it. I though about a SP101 but would rather have it in 357 since its bigger than a J frame anyway.

I've wanted one since I started reading about them! It sounds like an extremely versatile round, whether your looking for a target round, a hunting round or a SD round. When you look at Muzzle velocity and muzzle energy, it's better than a .38spl or a 9mm.

You can check it out here. http://www.ballistics101.com/327_magnum.php

What barrel length did you get the Patriot in, Jvanhoosen?

It is a round that makes me think about leaving the .355" fold.

I have been toying around with the idea of an SP101 in .327 for a while now.

Barrel length is 2.2 recoil is very light compared to my glock 23. Its gonna be a back up for me when I have to drive to the shady parts of TN

If you buy into it, it's supposed to make up for all the bad effects of 357 mag. They say it feels like shooting a 38 with the effects of 357 mag. Performance exceeds 7.62x25 which wears faster than the same guns in 9x18mm , makes me wonder how safe it is shooting full power 327mag in guns that are built on 38 platforms.

As far as the noise, I would say similar to a 38 or maybe a 380. not very loud but then again I had ears on. Daddy O I have always been one that any gun is better then no gun. I work in the OR at vandy and have seen people come in with 7 45 slugs and walk out in a week but on the other hand I have seen people come in with a 22 cal gunshot and they end up in the morgue. So as far as I am concerned its the shooter not the caliber.

^ It's not a.22. As a matter of fact it's not even close. You've got a slightly heavier bullet than a 32 acp that will easily penetrate twice as deep. Don't even worry about over penetration, bullets are moving so slow after they exit a body or thick wall that they don't travel much further. I would put money on a 327FM doing everything a 38spl can with one bullet left over.

I'm surprised that the 327FM isn't loud. They say it has less recoil than 357mag, that makes me wonder if it may have less velocity than they advertise.

Patton I will have to see if I cant get out and shoot it without ears on and I will give you a better feedback on that.

I have been thinking of getting one at some point, not because I think it fills a need, but a want. You also get the ability to shoot a lot of lower recoil options through it in .32 caliber, and if you reload that can make it a fun alternative.

Anecdotal at best. Until I find myself in a position where something like that is my only choice, then I choose not to buy into that thinking.

But, that's my opinion; doesn't have to be yours.

Anecdotal? If you would have made the claim it can't be bought at Walmart, I would have agreed or had you stated there's not a need for another pistol caliber. The truth is research shows it is a very capable round. It's very much like rifle caliber performance. Not quite enough for deer but neither is .223 according to most.

The only reason I want one is for the extra round and more control than a 357mag without sacrificing much if any. I've never met a single person that said 357recoil in a jframe was pleasurable but the 327 guys claim it is. I do question that because the 32H&R mag is supposed to be like a 38spl.
