Primitive Skills

Since the meet held at Spot's place last weekend, I have recieved tons of request for "project information". I would like to start posting some "how to's" here. It would be simple projects you all can follow along with.

I'll let TGO David and the Mod's to locate this thread where it would best suit the community. Tanning instructions are located on the "Hunting Forum", but I think more people would read it here.

Thanks for the support.

Dave

I'm impressed, Dave! Sounds like you're going to have a new sideline if you're not careful.

If I had to answer all the notes I've received since the weekend at Spot's, it'd take me... about 30 seconds.

Guess I'll have to <happily> settle for providing comic relief. ;)

Still, if anyone would want to do an actual primitive survival camp (no phones, no cars, no coolers, no camp chairs, no bacon & eggs for breakfast, etc... but wild plant foods, basic shelter building, cordage making, etc...), then I'd be happy to do more than just talk for a few minutes and pose for pictures in my skivvies.

I've been meaning to ask you where you got your trivet, TS. Also, have either of you ever tried lamp wicking for char cloth?

Posted

My best friend made my trivet for me as a gift - not too difficult with some 3/8 steel strap, a butane (or acetylene) torch (or even a hacksaw to facilitate bending the legs), a drill and a small brad to use as a rivet.

And yeah - I don't know if you got the chance to see my "pipe lighter," but it's basically round lamp wick, inserted through a brass tube which serves as both handle and extinguisher. It's slightly charred on the end and readily catches a spark - when you're done, simply pull it back into the tube and it extinguishes itself. Another friend and I made char from 2 inch cotton strap several years ago which worked at least as well as anything I've ever used and better than most.

LMAO! That's kinda' what I'm afraid of - mine is coming, but no one will show up and I'll end up playing with BY myself again. :biglol:

Hey TS, I hear you're gonna make the cover, maybe even a centerfold, of Longhunters Anonymous.... :)

Naw, maybe Tallhunters anonymous. the Longhunter is Dave's persona - I'm more Western Free Trapper...

They couldn't get Dave down to his skivvies

Did seem like maybe you tangled with a board stretcher in your youth...

To get back to the OP, I think you're right, Dave, this probably would be a better spot, location wise, for tanning instructions and other "How To's."

Im down, but are you sure about the no bacon rule? Bacon makes everything better. What about squirrel bacon?

Okay, bacon is cool. Wish I could find a place down here to get good slab bacon - I used to buy a 5 pound slab twice a year from a good butcher up home and there ain't much better than carving off a couple of hunks for breakfast, then saving two more hunks to flavor some hardtack for nooning.

And squirrel bacon would be great if you can find someone squirrely enough to make us some. :P:lol:

If all goes right, I'll have some more wild pig bacon by then...

I may even make a ham...we'll see...

Suggestion.

When I was in Boy Scouts, we had a three day survival camp out. Unbeknownst to us BTW! We were gathered together for what we were told was a "little outing" and told not to bring a pack or anything. THen we were driven to an undisclosed location and, "Here you go." The ONLY supervision/intervention by the leaders allowed themselves to do was be there for emergency support.

I had the time of my life, but many of the other boys did not. There in a circle around a roaring fire were half a dozen scout leaders, laughing drinking coffee and eating hot dogs and marshmallows. We were not allowed within 25' of the fire. They kept a close eye on us and were prepared to render aid if we got in trouble but nothing else. The previous day were sat through Emergency Preparedness and they went over a great many things. Funny, I still recall being told that "Only a fool would EVER be caught without a knife and a firebuilding intrument."

At the time I was going through a Batman phase so I had a Korean surplus web belt that I wore everywhere but to school. It had my knife, a mini canteen my grandmother bought in the mountains, and two M16 magazine pouches that I kept a bunch of goodies in. My lean-to shelter was pathetic but I did manage a roof over my head that held a bit of heat in from my little fire. It took me three hours to get a small redeye out of the creek nearby and he was about the size of the palm of my hand. Damn, it was good though! I cooked it on a stick like roasting a hotdog. I went without the second day. THe third and last day, I am neither proud nor ashamed of, it is what is, SURVIVAL. One of the boys had cut his hand trying to break some cedar branches in half and when the leaders went to tend to him, I stole three oatmeal creme pies and an opened pack of hot dogs. I 'fessed up to it but wasn't chastised. RUles for respectable and honorable behavior get modified in a survival situation.

Wow, didn't realize I had typed a boring story here, didn't mean to! My point is, why not have a campout with one rule, if it don't fit in your pockets, you can't bring it! One day is really easy. That belly starts rumbling on the second or third and things change quick.
