Canoing is alot of fun. It's been way too hot here lately to go. There is a rack made to help support your canoe, but you must have a receiver hitch for it.

That reminds me of a story from a friend that had a john boat that was tied to the roof like that. He and his friend were driving down the road and suddenly the front ropes disappeared. They turn at look at each other for a moment, get a horror look on their faces, turn quickly to look to the rear and see the boat tumbling behind them. They went back and there was nothing to salvage. Moral of the story, make sure your ropes are tight. Each one thought the other went back to tighten the front ropes.

We bought some sit on kayaks a few years ago. My wife goes out with her friends very regularly. Me, on the other hand, only go once a year. I can't be in it for very long and the water has to be very smooth or it isn't very enjoyable.

I got this for the kids to enjoy (ages 11 and 7). We will be learning water safety and hopefully swimming. I was really nervous hauling it on my small car, but I checked the knots 3 times and it held with no problems. I am doing a rain dance to fill the creeks and rivers back up soon. I can't wait to go exploring!

You're a lucky man! My old canoe has given me literally thousands of miles and hundreds of hours of enjoyment from end of the country to the other. (And I just about guarantee that it'll be one of the best investments you've ever made!)

Out of the two I would rather have a kayak over a canoe. You may not be able to carry as much on a kayak but they are easier to manuever, handle rough water better and generally cheaper.

We looked at sit in and sit on kayaks. And the sit on ones are nearly as stabile as the sit in types. We have two, one that is about 7 feet and another that is 9.5 feet. Both have their advantages. The small one tracks better and is more manueverable while the big one is less manueverable but has a TON of carrying capacity as well as storage.

Have you tried Craigslist? I have seen several listed lately.

One of the many things I miss after my heart attack is canoeing. I used to be an instructor and spent almost every weekend in the summers on a river. Took several long trips including the Salmon twice. It is a very good sport for families. As far as travel the canoe is one of the most efficient modes of transportation and can carry a lot of equipment. I still have two of my canoes and the equipment.

Both need new seats and one is just a hull. Anyone interested contact me I have paddles, PDFs, and bags that I should sell.

Enjoy the sport and take the kids out as often as you can.

Congrats on your new canoe, Ive been a river rat for as long as I can remember, great way to spend quality time with family, friends, or even just soloing around enjoying all that nature has to offer.

Wish I had a picture of the shuttle car that used to run the Hiwasse. Ford festival with four 17 canoes on it. The car was completely covered.
