Charging Handle Question?

I purchased a Nikon P-223 3x9 40 BCD scope. After mounting the scope on my Ruger SR556 the charging handle is difficult to get my fingers on. I used the Nikon mounts. The rear bell of the scope restricts grasping the handle. The eye relief is 3.6 inches. My train of thought it to change charging handles or the latch on the handle. Does anyone have experience with this issue? All suggestions are welcome.. Thanks

Any wider latch will help, if the "pin" is good cheaper latches are fine.
