Beretta Rant

Ok, so some give me guff for carrying a Beretta saying "someone could just pull the slide off the gun. I saw it done." The source of this is the last Lethal Weapon movie where Jet Li (a real badass btw) pulled the slide off Mel's Beretta. Take a close look at this photo in the dead center. The takedown lever has already been unlocked and flipped down. There is nothing holding the slide on the gun. If Jet Li cannot pull the slide off without having the gun set up for him no one else can without getting shot. Yeah. /RANT.

Sorry, I went to a gun store yesterday and heard the same old line from the guy behind the counter. LOL

I wish you hadn't shown me this! Now I'm throwing away all my Berettas! Since it was in a movie....it has to be true...Hollywood wouldn't lie! Darn you to heck Jet Li!!

Joking aside...I hear you! I've heard both salesmen and customers in GS say this before too. One even told me that Beretta was going to have a recall because owners keep getting their pistols taken from them with the "Jet Li" move. Wow!

The funniest was a couple of years ago when a cop talking the slide pull off crap while I was looking at a 92 compact. At first he seemed like he meant well, but then he turned obvious gun snob so I told him I did not believe him. I said "here I'll show you." We both checked the gun to make sure it was clear and when I would not point it at him like he wanted he just said to point it as close to him as I was comfortable with. I did, and as soon as his arm moved toward it I said "bang." He was less than pleased.

Man this really upsets me. I was thinking of adding a model 92 to my collections because I don't own anything in 9mm and want a wide varieties of calibers for the zombie apocalypse. Now I have to start over in my shopping( it takes me months to find and purchase a gun because I don't sell guns.) if Jet Li can take it apart one handed I am sure the crackheads on the street can.

Man, if I had a nickel for the amount of people I've showed Beretta's to that said, "I heard someone can pull the slide off that pistol in no time if you pull it on someone in defense!" I would be a rich man.

Usually the, "OK, show me how." method works best.

That's the rare"Movie" version of the 92.

It evidently also fires with the safety on.

Yeah I've heard that before. I usually respond with thefact that by that logic any firearm with an exposed hammer is also junk. If a bad guy can take apart my Berreta he can sure as hell stop the hammer from moving rendering it useless.

The only responses I've gotten have been so desperately pathetic you could just look at the guy and he'd start getting flustered.

On the flip side of the coin, I have been able to take one apart quite quickly with one had for cleaning in a non stressful situation. Maybe someone with nerves if steel and lightning reflexes could do it. I just tend to doubt it.

I suppose if I ever overheard someone talking such nonsense (haven't heard it yet) I would just mind my own business. However, if someone told me this I would have to let them know they are a flaming idiot. I'm more than willing to put a Simunition barrel in my Beretta and let anyone try as many times as they want to see if I can shoot them before they can get the slide off.... I'm betting I win every time and they quit before we get to round three.

Of course, the flip side to this is never holding someone at gun point within arms reach unless they are in the surrender position of facing away, on their knees, hands interlaced behind their head and feet crossed. Anyone can easily take control of that firearm once it becomes a one on one battle. There are plenty of videos out there of gas station clerks disarming would-be robbers for lack of proper weapon control.

If you pull a gun on someone and they still have the means to attack you then you'd better be ready to use it. Otheriwse, keep it holstered a take the Jet Li beat down.

I used to have an M9 and this is exactly why I got rid of it. I could hardly holster the damn thing without the slide falling off. Then I switched over to a Glock but it melted while in my glovebox one day. I had a 1911 after that but it was only really good for showing off the grill with my buddies. I have since given up on firearms in the hope that technology will one day fill this void. I need the perfect pistol that can satsify every moronic objection made by every gun guru in a gun shop. Until such time I will continue to perfect the bo staff. I suggest you fellas do the same.

There is something else no one has mentioned. You have to eject the magazine to remove the slide. They use shorter mags in the movies.

You do not have to remove the mag to remove the slide. In fact you can remove the slide with a full mag and one in the chamber. You can even remove the slide with one in the chamber, put the slide back on, and pull it back and eject the round from the chamber. You can also chamber a round, remove the slide, place it back on, lock the slide, and fire it in DA.

Disclaimer: I do not own a M9A1, so it might not be possible with them. I know a couple of internal parts are different with them.

Well only way to see who is right guys is to try it. I have seen some "self defense" videos where the people had apparently been taught this. Seems like if you were going to disarm someone that it would be better to redirect the pistol away from you instead of attempt to pull it toward your body. Just my .02 cents.

I'm out of town and don't have my 92FS with me, but that's how I remember mine working.

So assuming it is, there's no doubt that a 92/M9 would be MUCH easier to pull this trick with any other semi with which I'm familiar.

Grab slide pointed at you with left hand, press release plunger with forefinger, pull release forward on other side with thumb, slide comes right off. You don't even have to pull on slide, will just spring forward on its own soon as release is toggled.

Could a world class ninja do it quicker than a person could squeeze a trigger? Probably not.

But could someone do it if the shooter hesitates? Don't see why not, could be done in literately about a second, certainly under two.

Back in the 90s One of my Marines saw this crap in a movie. It was all they could talk about. That is until they tried it. It did not work on an M9. Maybe they have changed them since then. I don't know.
