Safe Commute Bill not dead

Whatever laws are brought before the legislature in 2013 won't make a difference unless we make changes in 2012. Work to defeat anyone running for office that doesn't actively support our rtkba.

Let's look at 2 choices. Choice 1 is an incumbent that wont support our cause. Choice 2 is an unknown challenger that may not support us either. If you help get choice 2 elected you'll cut the power choice 1 may have gained and you'll have someone easier to defeat next time. The longer they stay in, the harder they are to get out.

The bills themselves are dead; however, the issue certainly is NOT dead. That said, if the current leadership stays in place (Haslam, Ramsey, Harwell and Maggart) then there is probably less chance for ANY firearm friendly legislation coming out of the Tennessee Executive or legislative branch anytime soon.

What is likely our best chance of getting any improvement with regards to restoration of our 2A rights (whether the safe commute issue or anything else such as constitutional carry, improvements to the HCP process, etc) is to unseat Marggart with Lt Col Rodgers...if Rodgers can replace Maggart as the Republican nominee in district 45 it will have a significant impact on the legislature not just because Courtney is very pro-2A but also because it will show the strength (or lack of it) of the firearms community in Tennessee since both the NRA and the TFA have targeted Maggart for defeat.

Maggart, if you remember, has always touted her support for the 2A but this past session, she blocked the bills from coming to the floor for a vote even though the bills had successfully passed every hurdle necessary to get there and even with opponents to the bills wanting them put to floor for a vote. She and the leadership didn't want to have to vote on the bills because they knew a "no" vote would show their true support (i.e. lack of it) to the firearms community while a "yes" vote would piss off the big corporations who's campaign donations they were wanting for their re-election campaigns.

The single most important contest on the State Level is the Rogers/Maggart race.

Please, if you value your Rights as Citizens, become involved. There is no more important conflict of ideology, Maggart is compelled to seek Power over support of our Rights and the instructions of the Constitution. Act while you can!

You do realize there are 2nd amendment supporters who do not support the parking lots bill? Because they also support private property rights.

We should be focused on removing postings from public locations... Having vehicles covered under the home exception for firearms... Or getting true constitutional carry....

Not trying to tell a business owner what he needs to do with his property.

I am aware and I wholeheartedly disagree.

Because they also support private property rights.

That's not supporting private property rights, it's allowing a business to control my private property. Don't gun owners have property rights too?

Allowing me to park on their property is a benefit to them as well as me so they can't claim the high ground there. Deciding what I can have in my car doesn't just affect me while I'm on their property. It affects me from when I leave home until I return home. What gives them that right? I am a former business owner so I understand the issue from both sides.

I truely believe that Safe Commute is not dead as a topic or possible bill for next session. With Maggart out now, we need to get behind Courtney Rogers in the general election THEN Judd Matheny as Speaker.

My REAL concern is NOT that a parking lot bill will not be introduced, it is that it will NOT be in an acceptable form. All of those who aided in killing this legislation behind closed doors, Ramsey, Harwell, Maggart, McCormick, have ALL said that the bill needs more areas of compromise. THAT SCARES ME. They will work their @$$'s off to pass a bill next session just to say we were wrong about them. The problem I forsee is that it will have too many exemptions and be useless. Remember the much rumored "FedEx Amendment" that went around?

The Safe Commute bill as introduced last January and amended was just fine as it was. As an earlier post noted, it was killed because the Republican leadership knew two things, it would have likely passed AND they DID NOT want a recorded vote.

We REALLY need also to have either an accompanying non-discrimination bill as we did last year OR have the anti-discrimination provisions written into the parking lot bill. Since the last session ended, I have been contacted by several persons who work where I do, who recounted stories that would curl your hair that I will not go into detail here about. Discrimination and intimidation happens folks. If you don't believe it, you are nearsighted and blind.

I know I have not been very active on the forums since the session ended but I have NOT stopped working on this. We CAN NOT rest untill this untill the Governors signature ink is dry. Just because the General Assembly is not in session does not mean the work takes a break.

Let's stay the course.
