HCP needed for sale

So I've been looking through the classified section a bit and have noticed the occasional seller will list having a HCP as being neccasery for the sale. Now I realize this is a free country and one can make just about any kind of legal demands they want when selling an item, but just kind of curious a to why.

Is it to ensure the buyer is legally allowed to posses firearms? Maybe some permit holders just prefer to do business with other permit holders? It's really no skin off my nose as I've yet to see anything I've "had to have" plus I probably couldn't afford it anyway, just kind of curious as to the reasoning.

It's a simple way to say if they have a HCP then they are legal to own the firearm. If anything was to come back you could say he/she produced a HCP i believed it to be valid and be a legal sale to someone who is able to possess a firearm per state and federal law. Accorse an average person can't run a HCP to determine if it's valid but face value would be enough.

HCP holders fall under IMO the "Good Guy" label and I will only sell to these folks

not to say that if you do not have a permit your a bad guy,not at all but its safer knowing

my firearm is going to a good safe home and wont end up in an irresponsible hand

I agree with the above, and (if no HCP)a FFL transfer is OK with me.

If the buyer wont agree than I would not sell to them.

I'll usually say that a buyer with an HCP is preferred in my ads but not required.

If I post an ad somewhere other than this site, I definitely require an HCP for purchase. Here, if it's not somebody I "know", I might require it. Just a last chance CYA type thing. That way I can at least say that to the best of my knowledge he/she was a resident of TN and was not prohibited from owning a firearm.

As an owner of a firearm, as long as I meet the requirements for a legal sale, the purchaser has the choice to meet my terms of sale or purchase elsewhere.

Thanks guys that's what I was thinking but I was just kind of unsure what a HCP had to do with purchasing a rifle. I guess if I needed another reason (which I don't) to just take the class and get it done with, there it is.

Now just out of curiosity, would any of you guys consider bending your rule for someone with a C&R license? Seems like that would be a pretty safe way to ensure a body was legally allowed to possess firearms.

Yeah I think I'd take a C&R as both proof of residency and ability to own.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. I have both a C&R and an HCP and I can’t remember anyone selling me a gun asking for any ID.

If I’m selling I ask for proof of age (if they look young) and a Tennessee driver’s license. Never had any problems with that. I’m required by law to check that they are a Tennessee resident and are of age. Unless a person told me they couldn’t legally own a gun I wouldn’t have any way to know that or to check it. If someone starts telling you they can’t legally buy a gun in a gun store; you are being set-up.

The biggest concern with a FTF gun buy is that you are setting up a meet with someone you don’t know and they know you will have a large amount of cash. I choose the meeting place carefully and I get names and phone numbers I can verify or I don’t go. Unless they are long time members here.

Get your HCP. I have had a C&R for about six years now and never used it to buy a gun, but it has saved me some money with some on-line retailers on gun stuff.
