Nope, but which ever applies to you, you have to show proof.

Correct. You do not have to show proof of citizenship to get a HCP or DL.:D

You do if you are a US Citizen....so your statement is just as wrong as the other.....

...and now I think that is enough of the word play....:D

Gents & Ladies I just wanted to let you know that for Renewal of your HCP you

must have other paperwork besides $50.00 and a Application.

You will need additional

paperwork to prove what status you are. I was not told this on the phone or website. I had my military ID so it save me the hassle of another trip. I was told by people at the station it was a quicker return than by mail when they did it. They double check all the paperwork while you are there and do the copying of documents

different than how I would have done them.

I hopes this info helps everybody.:D

I renewed my permit today. I called the office first before going and was told just to bring my HCP and funding. After my 1 1/2 hour wait I got to the window, handed my form and HCP over. Paid for it, and they then took a new picture. The employee told me they would like verification in the system, like next visit, but was not required.

Also told me there will be no more DL renewal online, like we did in 2004.

Well it's not beyond the realm that employees don't know all the requirments etc...

We had a guy on here not too long ago, that they wouldn't let him use Military ID as proof. Called Nashville and they said he could, printed of the states web page and went back....all was ok like nothing ever happened.

:D

fact is if some of my students went by what they were told at the testing centers they would have started carrying right then and never waited for their actual permit cards in the mail.... the people at teh testing centers worry me some times!

My HCP was up for renewal last Nov. and in Aug. printed the form off the web site wrote out a check and sent in snall mail and a week later had my renewed HCP. Had no problem. When I renewed my DL in 2006 had to bring my Birth Certificate into the DL station and they checked it and made notation on my file and got my DL. NO PROBLEMS.

Seems as if Channel 5 in Nashville (IIRC around February), ran a segment on the permit office not running background checks or something like that, since then, it seems that new permits and as of late, renewals have been taking a very long time.

then they processed me like nothing happened or they had never seen me before

Typical government hourly wage employee. They just put in their time, and go by the rules. No exceptions. No feelings. No concern. Robots. Their not all like that, but it's typical.

Ok...just to keep things confusing. I was the Hardin Co/Savannah DL station today getting my son his Learner's Permit, so I though I'd ask them about HCP renewal. The lady there told me "as of now" they do not require proof of citizenship or legal residency to renew a HCP. But the way she said it leads me to believe it could be coming in the future.

Of course I don't know for sure, but I feel the person where R1100R went just got the requirements for DLs and HCPs mixed up, or the change is so new no all personnel know if it and I was told wrong.

Either way it is much easier to bring proof and not need it than the other way around. Of course as long as you can renew by mail, I don't see how they could require proof doing that, but I wouldn't be surprised if when you get your renewal notification in the coming months it will say you must come in and show proof of citizenship or legal residency to renew.

OK, just to add more confusion. To apply for my HCP, I went to the DL Testing station in Gallatin last year. I went there because it is usually easy to get in and out. They told me I had to have my birth certificate which fortunately I had brought with me. They made a copy and five weeks later I got my HCP. I also had to have it the year before when I renewed my DL.

You do have to show proof of Citizenship or legal residency (as of 07/01/05) to apply for a first time HCP.

As of now, some have been told that you do not for a renewal, but that is probably coming.

I got the letter in the mail from state telling me it was time for me to renew my HCP.I filled out the form, sliped in 50 bucks and got my renewed HCP in no time.I`m not a citizen but a permanent resident (green card ), the only difference between citizenship and a green card is that with a green card you can not vote and renews automaticaly every 10 years...and they told me I can`t get a job as a Metro Cop without a citizenship, so I guess now I have a reason to get it done, finally after 11 years, but I didn`t care much about politics and voting I guess...

so you can still renew by mail, as long as you don't mind them keeping your proof of residency :)

A permit holder can submit a Renewal Application at any Driver License Center or renew by mail. To receive a renewal application by mail call 1-866-849-3548. The renewal application must be complete and signed by the applicant. The application, CERTIFIED PROOF of U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residency (no photocopies; documents will NOT be returned) and the $50.00 fee payable by check or money order, can be mailed to the following address

Of course with the price of gas as it is....it may still be cheaper to mail them your birth certificate then go online and get a new one instead of driving to a DL station if you live very far from one. :)
