Carrying during a hike?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. I am trying to get into hiking, but I live near Memphis. Thus, can one carry while on the trail outdoors on public property? Thanks!

Some of the parks are posted, some are not. The state parks are not posted. You may carry but not discharge if you have an HCP. Certain city parks are posted. I believe Shelby Farms is posted. Most City parks are posted. Bartlett is not posted.

Most state parks are posted, but they do not apply to HCP holders. You can discharge if there is a viable threat, just don't go shooting at squirrels and whatnot.

No, it’s a crime to carry a loaded gun in this state. You have to have a Handgun Carry Permit.

Legalities aside, it can be a challenge to carry a gun in a typical hip holster while wearing a backpack with a hip belt. If you are just day hiking and carry a small pack without a hip belt, it's probably not an issue, but I would recommend an OWB holster over an IWB. Too much rubbing with the IWB. A fanny pack, worn in the front (although a little dorky) is a workable solution if wearing a pack with a hip belt. Thigh holsters also work.

a defense is "Incident to lawful hunting, trapping, fishing, camping, sport shooting or other lawful activity"

Always wondered if hiking would be considered in there.

Carry a fishing rod, at least you were looking for a place, right? :)
