Petition Jimmy Cheek's (UT Chancellor) Pay Raise

Raise tuition then get a $22,000 raise, seems perfectly reasonable to me. Especially since he already makes over $350,000 (wtf!) a year.

"We have less money to do the mission we've got, and that translates into larger classes, it translates into fewer advisers, it translates into not having the money to do maintenance on buildings, and things of that nature. We're doing a lot more with less money, and over time it's going to be hard to continue that."

Yeah UTK's prices are starting to skyrocket. They don't call it 'The Big Orange Screw" for nothing. A raise in tuition and a new policy that full time students will be charged for a minimum of 15 hrs each semester (even if they're only taking 12-14 hrs).

You can blame Lamar for some of the legacy that has UTK where it is. He very effectively pissed off the Dems in Nashville when he reluctantly and belatedly agreed to be Prez, state was in budget crunch, so Nashville uncharacteristically screwed UT in return, and that was beginning of reduction % of state funding that never really consistently came back. So grants and endowments became even more important, but as the Sciences slid down the ratings, especially the once proud flagship of Engineering, those have lessened also, so tuition has done nothing but climb. But of course Admin is always gonna carve a disproportionate amount off the top, just like CEOs of even failing businesses. It's the American Way.- OS

They could always not waste money on buildings like the useless "Student Enrichment Center" currently under construction. While they didn't mention the Engineering program slipping during my enrollment (they must have conveniently failed to mention that), I did hear that their chemistry program is under review b/c of their extremely low pass rate. UTK is trying too hard to be an ivy league school when they need to remember their roots.

The raising of tuition and the a**hole getting a raise doesn't really surprise me, Universities fully expect students to get school loans these days and don't really care much about the debt they put their students in. What really gets me is what bkelm18 mentioned, that they are charging you for 15 cr-hrs if you are only taking 12-14. It's like going to a restaurant and being charged for an appetizer and a desert when all I got was a terrible hamburger.

I wonder how the VA and other college paying institutions are going to accept this. If the VA refuses to pay a $15 "international fee" that the college charges everyone, I would assume they might not like this too much.

Oh, and this is blasphemy around here I know, but does the sports program need all the money that they use? Just saying, it should be college first...

Is that the one to replace the University Center which is still in excellent condition? I know they are building a new one, but don't recall if it had a different name.

The difficulty of the chemistry program remains to be seen, since that is the program I'm in. :) However I know the BS in Chemistry program is "accredited" by the American Chemical Society so I'd imagine it's a bit more intense than the other, tamer BS with a major in Chemistry.

Yeah, but for the most part, athletics is just a separate biz, and generates its own revenue.

And UTK would have to fold without it, as half the endowments the ejucashion parts receive wouldn't be there without the influence of the semi-pro hired thugs in Neyland and Thompson-Boling.
