Data base for sig serial numbers?

I'm looking at a p229 and I'm wondering if there is a way to tell how old it is by the serial number. Is there somewhere online to look it up? How much would a p229 .40 s&w in good shape be worth?

SIGARMS Customer Service @ 603-772-2302 will be able to give you a S/N breakdown. There is no public database which I am aware of.

It seems like 229's are all over the map these days. I have seen them from $500-850 for standard DA/SA models

Depends on what the 229 has on it. Night Sights? Fancy grips? Some kind of special edition, extra mags..DA/SA or DAO.... stainless finish etc etc

Generally speaking the MSRP (per SIG website ) for a basic no frills 229 is $929 and $1,000 for night sights. Now that is the full retail price from the company and you should be able to get one for way less than that if you shop around.

They are more expensive than other guns but well worth the higher price in my opinion.

Consider a CPO model (certified pre-owned) They come refurbished from the Sig factory. These are the Sigs you see with the red bands around them and come in a red case. Pretty good deal. You get a like new weapon for a quite a bit less than a new one.

You can use the above info for a starting price on a used one.....Like I said try finding a CPO at a shop somewhere, they are LEO trade ins and fully refurbished and tested by the factory.

Also, is there a date code on the bottom of the slide, just forward of the frame? It would be a two letter code.

Where on the slide? Can you post a picture? I have three and can't find it.

You won't have a date code stamp on your pistol unless it was assembled and proofed in W. Germany/Germany before being shipped over here.

If your pistol does have the proof marks, they're beneath the guide rod hole, on the underside of the slide. (The barrel and frame have proof marks as well.)

Try going to Sigforum.com. Good folks and good info. They have some vendors there that often have CPOs. I paid $450 for mine off gunbroker, though it's 9MM and that lowers the price.

It's a great gun and I carry mine everyday.

hi,

very good choice --excellent gun -- you won't go wrong.

not all have a date stamp ---but condition is the most important.

to my knowledge there were no problems or idiosyncrocies with any of them so year is not that big an issue.

expect to pay $450. and up for a used and $650. up for new.

if you get a .40 S&W you can always add the .357 sig barrel later. it's a direct drop in. not so with a 9mm.
