Some advice: One of the appraisers here had one, had left it in his glove box and it got stolen. The police told him that GPS units are a hot item right now and they are getting stolen, even when they are not in site. The reason is because they look for the suction cup circles on your windshield and then break in after it. So be careful.

That has been discussed on the GPS forums as well. If out in public I'll usually just take mine in with me, came with a nice little case.

I installed a permanent gps in my car and use on a regular basis. Not becuase I don't know where I'm going but becuase it tells how fast I'm going. Before you start mocking me just hear out. If you have a gps device or a friend with one use the gps' built in speed sensing function. It make you realize just how off the speedometer of you car is.I have tried this on three different cars and every one was off by a factor of at least 2 and up to almost 4

Mine is off 2-3 mph according to the GPS. I went up in tire size, 225/75/16 to 245/75/16 which caused my speedo to become the 2-3mph slower than the actual speed. The difference in tire size is about an inch. Not much but it did make a difference.:hyper:

I plan on buying one soon. I have looked at the software/GPS modual that can be installed onto my Palm, (TomTom and Garmin) but not sure if I want to go that route or buy a stand alone unit. I am the type that would have it on all the time. Just because I think they are neat. The speed features, timing feature, where crap is that I don't know in new area feature, etc. One of my "talents" is directions, geography etc, I can go to a place once, and pretty much get back to it, even years down the road. I also can see it in my mind visually. So for everyday operation, I don't need one, but I think they are one of the cooler gadgits out there IMO.

Ever check the maximum speed field on the trip computer and reads something like 235 mph?

:hyper: My etrex legend, I brought it with me on a business trip to Amarillo Texas one time, turned it on during the flight, my GPS showed around 540 mph(IIRC). What was neat, I could see the flight path. This was before GPS on commercial flights were frowned upon. I guess I would have to have a long talk with some "officials" if I did that kinda of thing today!

Resurrecting this from the dead.

I really want a new GPS. My Garmin Etrex Legend is old, has a green screen, does have city street maps on it, but is really just a part of my Go Bag.

I have a Palm Treo 680. They, along with TomTom have a package that is normally retails for 299.00 but the range has been in the low $200 area. Well the Palm Store has them on sale for $99.00, the kit comes with this:

The Palm® GPS Navigator Car Kit cradle with microphone, speaker, and echo and noise cancellation DSP electronics allows you to make speakerphone calls while charging your Treo™ smartphone and holding it securely in place. The suction-mounted cradle is easy to install and remove right on your dashboard. The car kit can also be setup for automatic hands-free call answering.

The Palm GPS Navigator Car Kit cradle integrates a SiRFstarIII™ powered GPS receiver for accurate location data, plus it features TomTom® NAVIGATOR 6 software for voice-guided, turn-by-turn directions. You can also navigate Tele Atlas® maps covering the United States and Canada, including millions of points of interest.

Contents:

  • TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 software
  • 1GB* miniSD card (adapter included) with map of the United States and Canada
  • Integrated car cradle with GPS receiver powered by SiRFstarIII and speakerphone
  • Suction cup mount and dashboard pad
  • Vehicle power adapter
  • USB memory card reader
  • Documentation

I believe I am going to get it. Anybody got experience with this particular product or at least the TomTom line. In the GPS world, I have always heard either Garmin or TomTom and everything else is secondary. Whatdaya think?

I have used both tom tom AND Garmin...I haven't tried the magellan yet...but I want to...

the tom tom has sent me to the wrong site ONCE. the garmin never...though I do like the ability to see how far I am away from a destination with the tom tom..but I don't like the fact that their route color is brown..

there are pros and cons for both of them!

My mother in law liked our garmin so much that Julez ended up giving it to her for an early mothers' day present.

I bought the upgraded one for the jeep..it gives the names of roads to turn on instead of just saying "turn left" or "turn right"...

all in all? a great idea and a huge timesaver when you have to go somewhere you've never been and can't be late!

I'm gonna have to cheack that out. I just got the Treo 700p. I have a free version of Google Maps on it, but it's not really worth a darn.

I just use my cell phone. Most modern phones are GPS enabled, and give excellent directions with a simple software download.

For a service fee...right? Or you have to have the internet package? I'm a cheap ba#$%*. I'm looking for the cheapest way, and I will be a big user. I will use it for work mostly, going from property to property in places I am not familiar with. So a pay per use could get expensive. Tell me more as I don't know much about the cell phone services.

if you are going cheap: Nuvi-200 (or the upcoming 205).

works well, and satisfies the bedget requirement.

It's not per-use... it's part of a package that is like $9 a month.

Hmm, something to investigate further. Thanks for the tip.
