New water filter

UPS just dropped off my new Monolithic Ceramic Filter. A friend of mine has one for hunting camp and he swears by it. Works like the more expensive ones but I paid 67 dollars for one you can pressurize which will filter up to 17 gallons a day. here is the link if anyone wants to check them out. No but it's on my list. Not sure how soon I'll test it. I know the Baptist Men's ministry used them in Haiti. The friend of mine that has the hunting camp was there and he swears by them.

Looks pretty similar to the Berkey system. I built the Berkey filters out of two five gallon buckets and 2 black carbon Berkey filters. I have never thought about pressurizing the top bucket to filter the water faster though. That's an interesting idea. With a gravity feed setup you need to keep the top bucket full to provide pressure to filter the quickest. The lower the water in the top bucket the less pressure and slower the filtration is.

The website lists that the filter should last 6-8 months when in use. It also says they are cleanable, but I don't see if cleaning them takes them back to zero, or just helps flow rate and will still need to eventually be replaced. It looks like the replacement filter is $20, so that isn't too expensive.

I have been using a Sawyer inline water filter for hiking. It is .1 pore size, the one above is a .2 pore size, but I think anything below a .3 is supposed to be good. Sawyer gives a 1 million gallon guarantee. I use mine in a gravity feed set up, but they sell a "squeeze model" that is the same filter, so it would work with the pressurized bucket set up. You can back flush the Sawyer to increase filter life and flow rate.
