"GATLINBURG — Authorities are on the hunt for a stranger who slashed and sexually assaulted a 44-year-old woman in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Friday.

Veteran personnel at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park said they don't recall an incident of this magnitude occurring in the Park — especially with the tourist season in full swing."

"We believe this was an isolated incident."

Wasn't very isolated as far as the victim was concerned. National parks aren't any safer than any place else as long as the general public has access to them.

You have that right. It's no different than going anywhere else except maybe more remote and isolated so no one will hear you scream.

And this is why I carry while hiking.

Me too.

News flash…. There are animals in woods that will kill you and eat you. Then there are humans that will kill you just for sport. Carry a gun.

Based on several recent news reports, the humans will eat you, too.

Seems the anti gunners have arrived in the comments section. Complete with the usual "if she had been carrying she would have been shot with her own gun".

Obviously they know that no one is capable of using a firearm properly, or they have boomerang ammunition.

This really isn't a hiking trail. It's basically a gravel path that starts where the Gatlinburg sidewalks ends. Puzzles me how there were no witnesses yet. There is usually no less than a hundred people on this walkway at any given time. You can see 441 almost the whole way and you pass the ranger station and walk around a maintenance place too.

I still believe she knew him, not really sure why I believe that.

There's an old "no guns" sign a couple of miles down in the valley off the Federal park signal point trail on the side of signal mountain. Or it was still there last time I walked that trail. Its funny, because the no guns sign is so riddled with bullets it looks like swiss cheese. I don't think there is a convenient way to get there by vehicle, so most likely some ranger had to tote sacks of concrete down there to plant the swiss-cheese sign. :)

Some of those comments are sickening. I spend a lot of time in the GSMNP and I'm armed 100% of that time. OC mostly in the park as long as lots of people aren't around.

There is definitely no shortage of douchebags on the KNS comment boards. I don't even look at it anymore because it pisses me off how ignorant and insensitive people can be when they're hidden behind a keyboard.

It makes you wonder what they think of themselves when they look into a mirror?
