Looks Like 2015 Mustang GT gets rear IRS!

Shoulda been done a long time ago. Along with a few other features the corvette has had forever. Ford has nothing to compete with the corvette unless you spend money for an aftermarket something.

The Mustang GT was never in competition with the Vette. The Shelby GT 500 was aimed toward the vette and now ZL1.

The Boss 302 was aimed toward the BMW M5's, etc.

The plain old GT's are aimed at the Camaro SS and cars in that class/price range.

IRS is great for everything except drag racing and in that instance solid axle is king. Depends on your use on whether IRS is desirable or not

Yeah but Ford has never built any REAL competition for the corvette, atleast not in my lifetime. Don't get me wrong, I'm NOT a bowtie fan by and stretch. The base model Corvette is not exactly a rare car.

The Pantera was the closest thing to a supercar that Ford sold. The GT is the current Corvette competition that Ford sells.

Can we really call that equal competition? I don't know what a new vette goes for but the GT is around 150K.

The Ford GT was made in 2005 and 2006. Ford has built several cars over the years to compete with the Corvette, but currently has no direct competition. I would not consider a GT 500 as a competitor. It's more of a street performer or cruiser type of car.

If Ford hadn't had their head up their butt, they would have made the re-introduced Thunderbird a "2 seater, vette eater" Instead it was an anemic turd. Ford needs to bring the T-bird back properly or better yet, bring out a new Fairlane.

The ZR1 goes for about $124,000. A loaded GT500 goes for $64,000.

The ZR1 isn't exactly a standard vette either.

Nope. The Zed06 goes for $75,000. Run of the mill vette goes in the neighborhood of $50,000.

Ford GT and Mustang GT 500 are two different cars, I'm sure you know that. Just pointing out the earlier post was referring to the supercar

Ford had IRS on the 2000+ Cobra.

Ford also put IRS on the Thunderchicken in `89.

Now, I have been a Chevrolet fan as well as a Ford fan for as long as I can remember, owning nearly as many Camaros as I have Mustangs (I do think the Mustangs win out by two or three, but I have owned a couple dozen of each.) I will now only own a Ford.

For everyone out there screaming that Ford has nothing to compete with the Corvette, well they weren't the ones that needed a government bailout when American manufacturers realized that they couldn't compete with foreign makers while making a subpar product and paying their workers too much. Ford made sustainable products, the F150 and the Mustang were at the forefront of that. They were vehicles that Americans wanted. And still do. I have never desired a Corvette.

It breaks my heart, because I honestly think the SBC is the greatest engine ever created, but I will not own a Chevrolet again. I have an SBC swapped S-10 that I left back in my stepfather's barn in Tennessee when I moved. It broke my heart, but I just can't bring myself to play with it anymore.

I know that being political about Chevrolet and Chrysler's collapse isn't what everyone feels, but it is what I feel. I left my `67 New Yorker back home too.

My Ford is outside.

We held our breath for the FR-S, some of us are happy enough with that for right now.

There is the Lexus LF-A too, if your pockets are deep enough.

They tried the IRS before and it was a flop.

The first IRS was a flop in that, what 99 4.6 Cobra?

But the IRS in the 2000 Cobra R 5.4L DOHC was fine as was the 2003-04 4.6L DOHC supercharged Cobra. ;)

We'll see with the new 650hp GT500, though I think weight will kill the GT500 v/s the Vette on the track. ;)

Yes, having owned a 2008 GT500. I was simply pointing out the price difference for a 220 MPH car. People tend to tout the differences between cars, but not the price tag. Ford wants to market to a broad spectrum of buyers; not just the rich. The guy who's not that wealthy wants to go fast too, but don't need carbon fiber brakes and such.

A lot of people don't know that the IRS was left out of the Mustang in 2005 to save about $200. If you aren't into drag racing that's a pain point, but the car was mainly a throw-back to the muscle cars of old; not a track car. Personally, I think that it should have been an option, but standard on the Boss 302.

So basically there are going to be tons of 2015 owners selling off their IRS for a solid axle.

Tons of cobra owners do it already.

You can't please everyone. And there is nothing wrong with a live axle. its a lot of fun to race one.
