He was the best story teller with his guitar. Most of his songs were too long to get much air time on the radio. Saw him at Vanderbilt in the early 80's and I'm so glad that I did.

Cat Stevens was good also. Until he became Ali Baba or whatever.

I grew up listening to Chapin thanks to my parents. I still remember they had tickets to see him when he died.

Recently I introduced my family, and a friend's family to him. Hearing them all singing "30,000 pounds of bananas" was awesome.

I got to meet him shortly before his death at a student's conference and talk to him at length. A socialist, but an interesting guy and I love his music.

I was there, also. One of my favorite musicians. Great story teller.

Yes he was. It's strange about that and what he wrote his songs about were lost loves. Sometimes I have to set

some of that aside.

Been a long time. I almost forgot about the "Hamilton Memorial #### kicking Country Choir" and

"Harry, it sucks!"

Thanks for linking that. I'll have to cue up some of his music on my ipod tomorrow. The man wrote some of the most depressing and most uplifting songs.

I have mostly been able to separate a person's art from his politics. Hell, even Hanoi Jane.

Me too. As I recall he only talked about the songs he was singing and how they came to be and never got into his politics.

Oh, I suppose his politics didn't really bother me. We sat and talked for about an hour before he did a little impromptu concert for our group. He was there with Angela Davis, who gave a rousing "workers of the world unite" "young people are the future of the movement" speech. Needless to say, even though my politics were a bit further left than they are today, that stuff didn't really register with a country boy from Indiana. After seeing this thread I put on Dance Bad on the Titanic, just to reconnect.
