Has anyone gone through an 80% project? The project seems simple enough and the price appears to be saving a few hundred bones. There is a website below that seems to walk you through the entire process. He doesn't sell the parts but the tap block is there.

I have done one from a raw forged blank. If you have the tools it is not terribly difficult. With the cost of stripped lowers just barely over $100 out the door in some cases it is not really worth it to do an 80% unless you are just dying for a project to complete.

I am still a bit new to this and a friend is helping me through the way. I figure this will really help me to get familiar with the inner workings. Not to mention to have something I built that actually fires. With that in mind, are stripped lowers something I should be looking for at a gun show or an online type of deal?

Simply putting together an AR from a stripped lower will give you really all you could ever want to know about the inner workings...

Stripped lowers, being considered by the BATF as the "firearm", must be purchased at an FFL. Background check also applies.

Most places around here in Nashville carry em. Reloaders Bench i know for a fact carry Saber Defense as does ASP in Joelton and Guns and Leather in GreenBrier, TN. They may carry other brands as well. Not to mention Bill (The Rabbi) at the East Side Gun Shop.

But you will definitely find them at gun shows. Would be cheaper to purchase at a local shop..

If you buy from a local store you're not only helping the local economy but if you have any questions or problems you can always call or go back to the store.

Not so much with a gun show bought one though.
