When I was in ER with a kidney stone I thought I was dying doubled over with pain. It was my first one.

They took the guy in first that was calmly ready a book, drinking a coke and taking a smoke break.

Thanks Laktrash, that argues against a squeaky wheel theory.

Some folk have higher pain tolerance and some folks are more excitable. Perhaps somewhat under conscious control, but if a person is born calm vs excitable, it isn't like the calm one is "morally superior" just bacause of his nature. Some is attitude. As a teen didn't get the willies banging heads as a football lineman but was neurotically scared of needles. Finally learned to "studiously ignore" needles and most other trivial medical procedures. But if they are gonna do some cutting, I at least want some kind of anesthesia. Ain't a masochist and can get squeamish if I think about it. The trick is not to think about it.

Old dad works the squeaky wheel for a different purpose. He had to go to the ER (under his loud objections) a few times the last few years. After they bring him back from the dead and after a couple of days he decides its time to go home. If they don't discharge him he starts acting so obnoxious that they hurry up and discharge him just so they don't have to hear him complain. There are certain advantages and perks to being ancient. :) Maybe they figure if he's feeling good enough to raise hell he's in good enough shape to go home.
